Here at SUNY Cortland, we have a wide array of activities to take part in and groups to join. These activities provide students with great opportunities to make connections that’ll make your college experience much more fun and active. At the forefront of these opportunities are clubs.
For pretty much any interest or activity you can think of, there’s a club of people with that same interest waiting for you here at SUNY Cortland. From archeology club to club bowling, there’s something for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’re an expert in any given field, plenty of clubs allow you in without any requirements of previous experience. Even us here at the Dragon Chronicle are a student ran club that’s free to join for anyone, regardless of your writing prowess.
Clubs are a great way to make friends. Whether you’re a first semester freshman, or an upperclassman looking to expand your circle, clubs help you meet people that can turn into lifelong friends. And even if not, you’ll still have something fun to keep you busy if you ever feel like you’re bored. Clubs usually have designated meeting times every week which from club to club vary, so there will always be something to try that’ll fit your schedule. Even if you’re not an expert at say something like tennis, it doesn’t matter. Anyone is welcome to come try and compete.
As the Vice President of Club Tennis myself, I can say first-hand the vast majority of club sports and activities are very welcoming, and you’ll probably meet people in the same skill range as you. There’s really no reason not to test your skills in a sport or hobby you’re familiar with. Or better yet, dabble in something you’ve never tried before. Either way, you’ll have gained at least some new perspective, if not found something you may want to continue doing the next semester.
If clubs are too much of a commitment, there’s always intramural sports too. They’re a great alternative if clubs don’t fit your schedule, or you can’t find one that feels right. Intramural sports cycle throughout each semester and have absolutely no requirement financially or skill wise. Anyone can put together a team, depending on the sport, and compete with other teams of students in a league sanctioned by Cortland, with student referees. Intramural sports range from typical sports like soccer and flag football, to things like kickball, and other recreational activities. There’s no harm in trying something new here, especially because there’s no barriers barring schedule conflicts. However, you can make sure matches are only on days that you and your team are available.
It’s always great to get out there and try something, or even to fill your time that you might be spending just sitting around in your dorm room on your phone. there’s no reason to not join a club or try an intramural sport. You’ll never know what you’re missing until you try it for yourself. all clubs run every semester, spring and fall, each year here at Cortland. So don’t wait, go try something new today!
