Cortland’s graduate student Mat Bruno became the schools all time hit leader during their second doubleheader game against Oswego last weekend. With a game-tying RBI single in the eighth inning, Bruno surpassed the record of 235 hits set by Andrew Mead from 2003-06.
“It is such an honor to be in the same category as the guys who came before me,” said Bruno. “Andy Mead was an exceptional ball player, and I am truly honored to be among him and other greats who have played here.“
Bruno’s journey to the top of the record books is a testament to both his individual skill and the team’s success. Despite starting the season at 4-7 against out-of-conference opponents, the Red Dragons have won 21 of their last 25 games.
Consistency is an easy word to describe Bruno’s career with the Red Dragons. But beyond the numbers, his approach to the game is rooted in dedication and discipline.
“Each game presents a new opportunity, and each game requires a different approach based on our opponents,” said Bruno “Following that routine has given me the ability to remain consistent throughout my career.”
It is a philosophy that has guided him throughout his entire career, and one that has allowed him to maintain a career batting average of .347.
When reflecting on his most memorable season with Cortland, Bruno dived into the unprecedented challenges faced during the 2021 season.
“It was extremely hard having our season canceled the year before,” said Bruno. “And on top of that, there were no fans allowed for the season.”
The COVID pandemic completely changed the sports industry in 2021, forcing athletes to quickly adapt or fall behind. With stadiums empty and the usual noise of the crowd replaced by silence, athletes were put under a ton of pressure.
“Between covid testing, online classes, and wearing masks during practice and competition, we found it difficult to enjoy the game as much as we normally would,” said Bruno. “However, we stuck together, won the SUNYAC tournament, and made a trip to the college world series.”
With the first seed in the SUNYAC tournament secured and only a few games left in the regular season, Cortland’s sights are set on the postseason. The Red Dragons wrap up their season against Fredonia this weekend, but all eyes are already fixated on the impending SUNYAC tournament.
Bruno has shown that he is determined to propel his team through the postseason.
“I want our team to push hard for another world series appearance,” said Bruno. “It was an amazing feeling getting there in 2021, and I would love to share that experience with this group again.”
Establishing a strong playing career in any sport often entails eventually having to step away from the game at some point. Yet, for Bruno, this doesn’t seem to be the case.
“I plan on keeping baseball in my life at all costs,” said Bruno. “I would like to pursue playing at the next level, and eventually, I would like to become a coach as well.”
