There are many reasons as to why someone can’t eat healthy in college. Students in college are balancing their schoolwork, classes, and social life. They tend to get too busy to take care of themselves. In order to stop these habits, we must look at the cycle from the start.
The most important step to healthy eating is understanding it doesn’t have to be a miserable experience. If changing your eating habits is making you unhappy, it would be best to figure out another plan for yourself. Also, the change doesn’t have to happen all at once – you can gradually begin taking these steps to make the change more easily.
Tip 1:
When going to the supermarket to buy food, make sure you aren’t just getting the most convenient item for you. The frozen section tends to be a spot individuals run to for a quick and easy meal.
Unhealthy food tends to be cheaper. It’s cheaper to get a frozen bag of chicken nuggets than a pound of chicken to make grilled chicken. But, be on the lookout for sales, and try shopping at budget-friendly stores to help combat costs.
Tip 2:
Not being able to cook is also a huge factor. Most students have no idea how to cook or are too lazy to cook. To learn, try to follow along with recipes! Pinterest,TikTok, and even Instagram, have a surplus of healthy and delicious recipes. You can start scrolling one day and bookmark a bunch for later use.
Tip 3:
It’s essential to drink lots of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and promote general health. Bring a reusable water bottle to class, and make sure you fill it up often. All dorms should have clean accessible filtered water, but sometimes its not the coldest.
The amount of sugary drinks you consume, such as soda, energy drinks, and coffee beverages with added sweetener, as these are unhealthy beverage options. Personally, I like to go to Bistro or Neubig and put ice and water in my reusable water bottle to bring back to my dorm.
Tip 4:
While it is completely ok to indulge in your favorite treats once in a while, try to be mindful. Watch for the signals of hunger and fullness your body sends you. Eat mindfully, taking time to enjoy every bite, and stop when you’re satisfied but not too full.
You can create great eating habits that will support your body and mind for success throughout your time in college by implementing these techniques into your daily routine. Recall that even minor adjustments can have a significant positive impact on your general wellbeing and academic achievement.
