As seasons change and we get closer to the end of the semester, the weather also gets warmer. So many activities can be done outside to take advantage of the warm weather.
As we know, it’s not common for Cortland to have warm weather or many lovely days. Especially in the spring semester, seeing the sun every day is rare. So when it finally happens, and the sun is out, here are a few things that allow you to enjoy the warm weather!
Going for long walks is one of my favorite activities to do outside as the weather gets warmer. These could range from walking to get food to walking around campus or just walking around town. You could do this either by yourself or with friends. It is also a great way to help stay in shape and work out. Instead of going to the gym and not taking in the nice weather, take the day off and go on a long, enjoyable walk.
You could also turn the long walk into a run if you are a runner. A nice slow jog around campus will feel good, and again, it’s better than being inside the gym on a beautiful day.
While on the topic of outdoor activities, one activity that is starting to become very popular is pickleball! Pickleball has become one of the most popular and played sports during the summer or in more excellent weather. You need one or three other people to be involved in this activity. The SLC provides the necessary materials for pickleball, so if you don’t have everything to play, don’t worry.
Closely related to pickleball is tennis, which is another excellent option. The tennis courts are outside the SLC and park, and people are always out playing when the weather gets nice. Tennis is another great way to enjoy the warm weather while being active.
A non-active way to enjoy the sun is just doing schoolwork or any work outside. Sitting outside on the grass on campus is very common when the weather gets nicer. For example, in front of Moffet, people are always sitting around, some throwing footballs, but most are sitting with their computers. Another popular spot is behind Hayes Hall and Dragon. Three dorm buildings surround a large square of grass: Hayes Hall, Dragon Hall, and Hendrick Hall. When it’s nicer out, this grass area fills up with students!
Yoga and meditation are other activities that are a mix of being active and relaxing. Yoga and meditation are perfect for you and help your body and mind. In the SLC, there are many yoga and meditation classes; if you attend these classes, you will know some of the poses/ moves so you can do them outside. Doing yoga outside in warm weather is very relaxing. Sometimes, they will hold a yoga class outside in front of Moffet. They did this last semester, so I assume they will do it again.
These are just a few of the countless activities that will let you take advantage of the warm weather. Soaking up some sunshine is essential, as Cortland sees it so infrequently. Arriving just in time to study for finals out on the quad, hopefully the sun is here to stay. Yes, you’ll have to take tests, but at least you’ll be warm!
