“I’ve always wanted to broaden my view on the ice and try something new. I got in touch with an agency and was able to commit to SUNY Cortland for the fall semester 2022,” said the 21-year-old sister Fanny Aneborn.
When my sister committed to SUNY Cortland, I got very excited for her. In 2023, I also wanted to do the same and decided to reach out to the coach,” said Filippa who’s one year younger than her sister.
Fanny Aneborn and Filippa Aneborn, both from Sweden, Linköping are currently playing in the red and white jersey for the Cortland Red Dragons women’s varsity ice hockey team. With different backgrounds from their teammates, both Fanny and Filippa have settled in well with the American lifestyle on and off the rink.
“I’ve enjoyed my two seasons as a Red Dragon. My teammates are amazing and I’ve been able to build friendships that hopefully will last forever”, said Fanny.
Since Fanny’s first game for the Red Dragons, she has tested three different positions, defenseman, center, and left forward. Her coach found the left as her best position because of the numbers she put up and since has recorded 15 goals and 11 assists. As a sophomore, Fanny is looking forward to what the upcoming season will bring.
“I am excited to see if we can continue on this amazing run we’ve had. My goal is to exceed our expectations once again,” said Fanny.
As both the Aneborn sisters only played together for one year in America, their one year has almost certainly been something to remember as they won the SUNYAC’s playoff.
“If I said we would win our playoffs against the best teams in the final, not many people would believe but somehow we managed to do the impossible,” said Filippa.
The women’s ice hockey team had a season to look back on as they were able to first beat Oswego 2-1 in the semifinal of the SUNYAC playoffs and then go into the final as massive underdogs against Plattsburgh which were reigning champions. The trip up north to the cold city of Plattsburgh would become a success as the team managed to win 3-2 in overtime after Elena Eichmann scored just two minutes in.
“What went through your head after Eichmann’s goal?”
“It took me a few seconds to realize what we had accomplished. I was speechless when I saw my other teammates screaming and skated down the ice to hug everyone. I couldn’t believe we beat a team of that quality in such an important game,” said Fanny.
Fanny’s sister Filippa shared the same feelings and even though she only played three games without recording any points she also smiled while talking about the team’s achievement.
“When I saw the final score I couldn’t move and had an amazing feeling, a feeling I still can’t describe,” said Filippa.
Filippa may only have contributed with three games on the ice, but she still belongs to the team and works hard every day to help her team more on the ice.
“My first year here might not have been much to brag about but I continue to work hard and have constant dialogs with my coaches,” said Filippa. “Hopefully, I’ll be skating more on the ice next season,” said Filippa.
