In a very close lacrosse game on April 6th, the SUNY Cortland men’s lacrosse team faced off against Brockport, resulting in a nail-biting 11-10 victory for Cortland. The game was filled with impressive plays, showing the impressive skills of both teams.
Stefan Swedlund emerged as a key player for Cortland, scoring 3 crucial goals throughout the game. One of his goals was assisted by teammate Nick Stoecker, highlighting the teamwork that pushed the Dragons towards the big win.
“The assist is just as important as the goal,” says Swedlund. “Without the good look and pass from Stoecker, the goal would have never happened.”
Caden Yancey also made a significant impact on the scoreboard, netting an impressive 4 goals for Cortland. Yancey’s goals included assists from Ryan Scanlon and Stoecker, demonstrating the team’s ability to work together effectively on the field.
“We run through drills like this during practice all the time,” says Scanlon. “When I saw Caden and the path he had to the net I knew he would score, the kid almost never misses.”
Klay Stuver added to Cortland’s tally with two unassisted goals, showing his individual talent and ability to create scoring opportunities for the rest of the team.
Sam Rothman contributed to the team’s victory with two well-executed goals, both assisted by Yancey. Rothman’s goals were a testament to the team’s unity and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and play as one.
“Not only can Yancey score, but that kid has an eye for an open player like no one on the team,” Rothman said.
The game was not without its tense moments, as Joe DeLany received a 1-minute cross-check penalty. Despite this setback, the Dragons remained focused and determined to secure the win.
“The way I see a penalty,” says DeLany, “if you get one that means you’re fighting for the win which means you care.”
Reflecting on the intensity of the game, Thrasher commented, “We did not think the game was going to be as close as it was, but we won in the end, and that’s what counts.”
The victory against Brockport was a credit to Cortland’s skill and teamwork on the lacrosse field. It was a thrilling match that showed the excitement and competitive spirit of college lacrosse, leaving fans and players alike on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
“The entire game was a difference between one or two goals,” says fan Gianna D’Agostino. “I couldn’t take my eyes off the game the whole time.”
SUNY Cortland’s win against Brockport serves as a reminder of the hard work and dedication required to succeed in lacrosse, and it sets a positive tone for the team as they continue their season with confidence and determination.
