From her early beginnings in gymnastics at the age of three to her eventual ascent to Cortland, Taylor Goldstein is showing great promise as a student athlete.
Goldstein has been doing gymnastics since she was three years old where she attended Gym Plus, New Image Gymnastics, and finally Apex Athletics before she came to Cortland.
“I followed my coach Amanda to Apex from New Image and met Rob,” said Goldstein, “Both of them had a huge impact on the gymnast I became in college. They helped me and pushed me to get to an amazing school and their coaching ways really benefited me in the long run.”
Transitioning seamlessly into collegiate gymnastics, Goldstein showcased her strength by placing second on beam with a 9.825 at nationals. She thus earned the title of All-American. Her achievements culminated in being honored with the title of “Rookie of the Year,” a testament to her outstanding performance and contribution to the team.
“When getting All-American I had a tingling feeling all throughout my body. My hard work that I was putting in paid off when it mattered most,” said Goldstein. “Hearing my name being called for second place was a dream. It was such a monumental moment in my life. Hearing my name being cheered on by my teammates just made it that much more special.”
Goldstein was one out of over one hundred freshmen in the running. Rookie of the Year is based off of your individual statistics throughout the season, and votes from a panel of judges, and coaches. Goldstein was going against freshmen from all seven teams in Cortland’s respective conference, NCGA East. This makes her win all the more impressive.
Throughout the season, Goldstein consistently demonstrated her commitment to the sport, reflected in her exceptional scores and work ethic. Her performances, including her highest score of the season on beam at nationals, and a 9.8 on uneven bars earlier in the season, underscore her talent and dedication.
Goldstein attributes much of her success to the supportive camaraderie within her team, where they collectively embody the spirit of unity and passion for gymnastics.
“My favorite thing about the team is the camaraderie,” said Goldstein. “At every meet we are the team that brings the energy. We go all in and just do gymnastics with our hearts.”
When asked about her most influential coach she mentioned Sulekha Modi and Nicole Jackson, Cortland’s head and assistant coaches.
“Sue and Nikki were the most influential,” said Goldstein. “Sue had trust in me as a gymnast and Nikki always reminded me of why I started this journey in the first place.”
Looking ahead, Goldstein remains focused on her goals. She is eager to forge lasting connections with her teammates, strive for personal improvement, and eventually assume a leadership role as a senior.
