Greg Jarvis is a man of many talents. He has put his blood, sweat, and tears into wrestling. The sport itself has allowed Jarvis to unwind and not think about anything else.
“The passion is what gets me,” said Jarvis. “I feel as if I can put away my troubles and allow myself to have some pastime.”
Jarvis’ family history in wrestling traces all the way back to his father. His father is a commentator for a wrestling organization and his brother, Jarvis’ role model, wrestled for the state finalist.
“The only athlete I would look up to is my brother, he was a state finalist in wrestling and extremely talented,” said Jarvis.
Jarvis’ brother, Matt, has stood by his younger brother throughout his career. He spent his days helping Jarvis learn new moves and better his technique.
“I knew that Greg would be a star, he’s just got something about him,” said Matt. “He always made sure that he practices every day, and it clearly showed when he went after his opponents.”
Throughout high school Jarvis played numerous sports. He played soccer, wrestling, lacrosse, and track. He was a star player all throughout his high school career.
“Yea I kind of bounced around in high school,” said Jarvis. “I remember dedicating all my time to this sport, so obviously I stayed with wrestling.”
Jarvis sustained a gruesome injury to his AC joint tearing it during the match. Jarvis’ injury was attributed to hitting his shoulder hard against the ground which made his joint pop out of his socket. After this injury occurred, he did not tell anyone.
He had another match coming up and he didn’t want to be taken out of the match. This made his situation way worse because soon after the match began, he sustained the same injury to the same spot, tearing it completely.
“When I tore my AC joint in my shoulder, that sucked,” said Jarvis. “It was in the middle of a match that I should have sat out for, but I ignored the signs and continued on my way, making it worse.”
Jarvis has a simplistic routine, which is not overbearing for the young star. The young star completes this routine daily.
“My routine usually consists of me waking up, heading to class, then I get to the gym for a nice workout,” said Jarvis. “After that I eat some good food at Neubig, get some work done, then when everything is finished, I get to bed.”
Jarvis had talked extensively on how competing against different wrestlers has made him a better athlete. Coming from many different teachings allowed Jarvis to gain the upper hand over his opponents, this is due to his knowledge of different techniques.
“The past teams I have been on have helped me improve my skills,” said Jarvis. “I get to interact with new people who have their own take on how to wrestle.”
With his vast background Jarvis knew he had something special here. He knew hard work would pay off. During his practices he would make sure he works on his techniques and his preparations for his future opponent.
“Drilling the same move over and over again is how I prepare for my next matches,” said Jarvis. “It helps me get the muscle memory down.”
Coming from a long history of wrestling, Jarvis has had his fair share of coaches. Each coach brought something different to the table. Jarvis knows the difference between a good coach from a not so good one.
“Coaches need to have a genuine interest in their players’ success,” said Jarvis. “Take it from me, I have been around the block a few times.”
