The Cortland Red Dragon’s baseball team has had an impressive last few weeks, winning 8 out of their last 9 games that includes 6 consecutive games in a row. This much needed streak comes after a tough skid earlier in the month of March, where the Red Dragons got swept in their season series against California Lutheran.
Nonetheless, the Red Dragons have looked their best this season throughout this winning streak, outscoring their opponents 49 to 16 over the last 6 games.
The streak started on March 25 at Oneonta where the two Red Dragon rivals squared off to start their 3-game series. They played a double header that day, with the first game being a relatively close one 4-1, but Oneonta didn’t stand a chance in the second game of the day, as Cortland dominated them 18-6.
The very next day was the best game out of the 3-game series, as Cortland won in a close one 6-5. Starting pitcher Will McCarthy did what he needed to do that day, pitching 6 full innings, giving up only 3 hits, and no earned runs. The relief pitchers for Cortland couldn’t get a groove, as they gave up 4 out of the 5 runs, but Greg Mays came in for the save and secured the victory.
The Cortland Red Dragons returned to Robert H. Wallace field for a 3-game series against division rival Plattsburgh last Friday, and kept their foot on the gas. The Red Dragons won on Friday 6-3, while the following day was a double header with Cortland winning 12-1 in only 7 innings and shutting out the Cardinals in the final game of the series 3-0.
The Red Dragons will have to keep this same energy for their next opponent, the Brockport Golden Eagles, who have an impressive record on the year at 13-4. While the Red Dragons are on a 6 game winning streak, the Golden Eagles are on a winning streak of their own, also winning 8 out of their last 9 games and are on a 4 game win streak.
“We are feeling good as a team, but we still have work to do,” says pitcher Nick Jessen, “We have to stay focused to keep this momentum going.”
The three game series between the two rivals take place with the first game on April 5 at Wallace field at 3 p.m. before playing a double header the very next day at noon and 3 p.m. once again.
