Cortland sweeped Plattsburgh in their first SUNYAC series at home this season. Plattsburgh was 11-6 and had never been swept on the road before coming to Cortland.
Across the three-game series, Cortland’s pitching staff showcased their depth, allowing just four runs over a span of 27 innings, effectively stalling the Cardinals’ offense and paving the way for Cortland’s sweep.
In the first game of the series, junior pitcher Devin Georgetti took the mound and delivered a solid performance, allowing only five hits and one walk while striking out three to earn his first win of the season. Cortland’s offense wasted no time, driving in five runs within the first four innings, with key contributions from Nick Marola and Mat Bruno.
Plattsburgh’s only opportunity to claw their way back came in the fifth with two runners on base, but a diving catch by junior outfielder Luke Schartner prevented the Cardinals from capitalizing. Although the Cardinals managed to score three runs in the ninth inning, sophomore pitcher Greg Mays stepped up to close out the game, securing the win for Cortland.
The first double header matchup saw freshman pitcher Matthew Nochowitz allowing no runs through six innings, only giving up five hits and two walks.Cortland’s offense provided ample support, racking up 14 total hits, with standout performances from junior Nick Chemotti, who finished the game 3-for-3.
Juniors Adam Mieczkowski and Mat Bruno also made significant contributions, each batting 3-for-4 at the plate. Plattsburgh’s starting pitcher Chris Santic struggled against Cortland’s potent lineup, giving up eight runs in just five innings.
In the series finale, junior pitcher Luis Misla led Cortland’s pitching staff to another stellar performance, pitching five scoreless innings while tallying eight strikeouts and two walks. Misla was named the SUNYAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for two matchups including this one. Alongside Ryan Banks and Cam Darrow, Misla combined for a two-hit shutout, securing a 3-0 win for Cortland.
Although Plattsburgh managed to break up the no-hitter in the eighth inning, Cortland’s bullpen held the Cardinals to just two hits in the final two innings. Chris Bonacci’s early double in the first inning set the tone for Cortland’s offense, and another double in the fifth inning sealed the victory.
Looking ahead, Cortland faces Brockport, another strong SUNYAC opponent with a record of 13-5. As the tournament looms, Cortland’s ability to sweep tough opponents like Plattsburgh gives them a significant advantage and positions them as contenders. With their pitching prowess and potent offense, Cortland is poised to make a deep run in the tournament.
