At this year’s SUNYACS back in February, sophomore Kellen Dickman, stepped up on the block at prelims for the 100-yard butterfly with high hopes of breaking the school record.
Once he dove in for a thrilling and intense four laps of fly, Dickman hits the wall and sees his goals accomplished with a speedy time of 50.13, breaking the previous 100 fly record of 50.52 made back in 2010.
As Dickman throws his arms in the air and slams them in the water out of pure excitement, the Cortland swim team jumps up and down with pride for their teammate cheering him on.
Dickman’s 50.13 placed him 2nd overall leading to A finals later that night which led to his next goal…to break his new time and go under 50 seconds.
Later Dickman once again, with new goals on his mind, stood up on the block and dove in for another quick and exciting race, finishing 2nd with a 50.00 on the dot. Although he didn’t break the 50-second mark his team celebrated his new time and new school record.
“I was excited to break the record, but I’m already looking forward to next year.” Dickman says, “Going 50.00 was disappointing.” he then adds. “Trying to go sub 50 at finals. I’m already planning on how to do that and come back a SUNYAC champ.” Dickman has many plans and goals ready for the future.
Dickman, having already accomplished so many goals this early in his college swimming career, only tells me he has a lot more to come.
