The Men’s and Women’s SUNY Cortland Hockey teams traveled up to Plattsburgh this weekend to face SUNY Plattsburgh in a back-to-back showdown in the championship game of the SUNYAC tournament. Neither of Cortland’s teams have won the title, and the men’s team has only had one other appearance in the game.
The first game of the day was at three p.m. when the women’s team began their game. Plattsburgh got on the board first in the second period, followed shortly after by a SUNY Cortland goal by Mia Hlasnick, making the score even at 1-1. There would be no more goals in regulation which would lead to an overtime period. At 2:33 in OT, Elena Eichman scored the game winning goal, sealing a 2-1 SUNY Cortland SUNYAC Championship title.
This game was followed by a 7 PM puck drop for the men’s squad. SUNY Cortland scored first with a goal by Colby Seitz in the 2nd period. Plattsburgh answered in the 3rd with a goal that tied it at 1-1. Cortland scored again in the 3rd making it 2-1. Plattsburgh scored again towards the end of the third, making the score 2-2, which would carry on to the end of regulation where the game would head into overtime. 9:13 into OT, Anthony Bernardo scored the game winning goal, securing Cortland Hockey’s 2nd SUNYAC title of the day.
Each team’s championship title secures their spot in the NCAA tournament, where they will compete for a national title.
