In today’s age social media platforms have become a part of our everyday life. Speaking for myself social media is something I use every day all day. It may not be good that I use it that much, but it has become a part of my lifestyle.
While sometimes these platforms can offer numerous benefits, they also can have a huge influence on how people perceive their bodies. Social media is filled with pictures and posts that can make life look perfect. You may see people with flawless selfies or pictures that have been edited to perfection and posts about someone’s amazing lifestyle.
When I use Instagram every day, I can’t help but to start to look at other people’s post and compare it to my own life or how I look. But the thing is a lot of these images are not real. These just promote unrealistic beauty standards. There have been many studies proving the impact of social media on body image and self-esteem, particularly among young people.
When people are getting constant exposure to this type of stuff it leads to insecurity, low self-esteem, and even body dysmorphia. People on social media will start to compare their achievements and lifestyles.
There has also been a rise in photo editing apps. These apps have made it easier than ever to change how someone looks in a photo. There have been many TikToks that I have come across showing what celebrity’s pictures actually look like without all the editing.
That is why now when I see a photo posted by a celebrity I have hard time believing that is what they look like in person. Photo editing can become a harmful habit of seeking validation through these images. The impact of social media on body image and self-esteem is not limited to individuals. Research suggests that exposure to unrealistic beauty standards can contribute to broader societal issues such as body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and mental health struggles.
Despite the negative effects, there is growing awareness surrounding the need for a more body-positive and inclusive online environment. Many individuals, influencers, and organizations are using their platforms to promote authenticity, diversity, and self-acceptance.
As users, it’s essential to be mindful of the content we consume and how it affects our perceptions of ourselves and others. Likewise, as a society, we must continue to advocate for a more inclusive and positive online environment that celebrates diversity and promotes healthy self-esteem for all.
