Over the weekend, Womens Cortland Club Volleyball took a trip to Oswego for a tournament. Ending with a 3rd place finish, losing to the Cortland’s B team. Nice win for the University of Buffalo beating out Cortland’s B team in the finals.
“It can be really frustrating for us when the second team is beating you in the semis,” said President Liz Serafin. “Every practice has the same outcome, we always beat the B team. But they played their butts off so we have to give them props.”
Before coming into the weekend, I had asked the team if there were any new things they are adding to their offense and they told me they have been practicing a new approach to attacking the ball. With different schemes and plays to incorporate in your game, it can really throw off the defense.
After the tournament, I spoke with Vice President, Samantha Arone to talk about the new plays they ran during the tournament.
“It was not good,” said Sam Arone. “Whenever we try something new in an actual game, we can never get it down. The timing was way off and half the time the hitters didn’t know where to be while running the plays.”
Looking at this from a different point of view. The team who never really gets recognized for their accomplishments, the Cortland B team. This team consists of very balanced players all around. They work very well together on the court making them a competitive team to play. I asked one of the players on the B team about their match against Cortland’s A team.
“It was a great game, but it sucks we couldn’t win the whole thing,” said Judy Anest, the B team’s court leader. “It felt really good finally beating the A team in a tournament. It shows how much we are improving as a team.”
It’s always a long and close game between Cortland whenever they play each other.
“Everyone on both sides of the court knows what to expect,” Said Liz Serafin. “We play with each other at practice all semester so we kind of know where the ball is going to end up. Yes I think we should have beat them, but they played very well and deserved to beat us. Now I know what the A team needs to work on.”
Big props to the Cortland B team on making a finals appearance and beating Cortland’s A team to get there.
