On Thursday, February 22nd, the Communication and Media Studies Department hosted its much-anticipated “Love My Major” Day, a celebration aimed at fostering camaraderie and appreciation among students and faculty.
Despite setbacks, ranging from the construction occurring in the department lounge area, where last year’s reception was held, and the original date being moved from Wednesday the 21st, organizers managed to transform the narrow hallway of Van Hoesen into a vibrant, cheerful environment of activity and positivity. Decked out with red hearts and lively decorations, the venue was filled with warmth and enthusiasm, perfectly aligning with the theme of the event.
Snacks and Games
Students eagerly gathered between classes to indulge in refreshments, including punch, chips, cookies, mini donuts, fresh fruit, and, of course, candies and chocolate. These treats added to the festive ambiance and served as a comforting reminder of the bonds formed within the Communication and Media Studies department.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the assortment of games and prizes that kept students and faculty entertained and engaged. From the ring toss challenge to the matching game, everyone found a game they could enjoy. Prize tables stocked with fun rewards had people eager to strategize and win a prize.
More Than Just a Major
This day was about more than games and prizes though, this was evident in the poster board displayed that allowed students to express their reasons for loving their major.
By the end of the day, the poster was covered in heartfelt tributes to faculty members and administrative staff who have provided unwavering support throughout their academic journey. Professor Kathleen Lawrence, organizer of this event, explained, “Many students wrote on a poster board their thoughts on why they loved our major! It was so rewarding to read through the comments and realize that some so thoughtfully even mentioned our Administrative Assistant, Maryalice Griffin, for her constant support of them as they make their way through the major. Professors were highlighted, as well! We do have remarkably bright and generous students! They make us so proud!”
The overwhelming sense of gratitude and camaraderie was felt very strongly on this day, reinforcing the close-knit nature of the CMS (Communication and Media Studies) community.
Students from all levels mingled and bonded over shared interests within their major, and new friendships blossomed, further solidifying the sense of belonging within the department. Representatives from various majors and concentrations within CMS were present, including Communication, Cinema, Media Production, Journalism, Public Relations & Advertising, and Pop Culture. Having all areas of the department present facilitated connections and fostered a sense of unity among attendees.
Lots of Love from CMS
Students departed with treats and prizes but also cherished memories of a day spent celebrating their passion for communication, cinema, and media production. The event served as a testament to the creativity and spirit of CMS majors, reaffirming the department’s commitment to nurturing a supportive and inclusive environment.
The success of “Love My Major” Day can be credited to its organizers and students for putting so much vibrancy and love into it. This event will catalyze continued collaboration and growth within the CMS community. This day was a wonderful reminder that common ground and shared experiences are the foundations of lasting connections.
