Cortland men’s lacrosse was challenged this past weekend in a battle against Union College and unfortunately encountered a loss. The final score of this scrimmage was 12-7 but was very educational.
Their practices moving forward will be focusing on the mistakes and weaknesses that they had made during the scrimmages so that these same issues will not occur in the future, and they can turn them into strengths. They will be doing this by practicing getting ground balls and working on their dedication to the game to see who really wants to win.
Defenseman Zach Perlett expressed, “The game was a tough loss. We had difficulty with ground balls and got out-competed,” Perlett said. “This has really been a focus this week during practice bringing energy every day and I think doing these things will help us get better for the season.”
The team is not letting this loss discourage them, but only going to learn from it to get stronger and become more successful in their upcoming games. This has not brought the team down, they are excited to go back onto the field and show how much they can improve in such little time.
Junior goalie Owen Folkwein said, “I am not happy with the outcome of the game, but I am glad that we are able to learn from this. Every mistake is a lesson and I hope that these lessons benefit our team moving forward for a successful season.”
This upcoming season is approaching very suddenly but the team is just getting started and still building their relationships for a powerful connection between everyone on and off the field. There is always potential to be better and the team is using this mindset in hopes for it to positively affect their playing and have more wins in the future.
Keeping a positive mindset is crucial for success and having new coaching staff and new teammates should bring a new dynamic to the field that the team is not used to. The beginning of the game was very close and showed the dedication of the team to fight back and prove their attempts to win.
Union was a well-organized team whose defense had won in the end, but this does not mean Cortland’s lacrosse team did not try to fight for a victory. There is an upcoming game next week that this team is ready to play in and give it their all. This scrimmage outcome has done nothing but show them what last few changes need to be made before facing their first seasonal game.
The Cortland Men’s Lacrosse team’s first official game is February 28th, at 4 pm against St. John Fisher.
