Critics are calling it “The best rom-com in years.” From director Will Gluck and co-writer Ilana Wolpert, comes Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s undeniable chemistry in a swoony romance.
Anyone But You took over movie charts months before its first preview. Starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, this movie gives a hilarious take on love and heartbreak. Directed by Ava DuVerney, the film falls into the romantic comedy genre, and takes place in a coastal town. Following Emma (Sydney Sweeney) a young law student who experiences an overwhelming heartbreak and embarks on her journey of self-discovery. An intimate romance sparks when she runs into Ben (Glen Powell) in a coffee shop.
There’s no denying that there’s chemistry between the two. Some may say the beginning of the film seemed predictable, but I think it provides an incredibly authentic storyline, and the off-screen romance was able to captivate audiences. Throughout the movie, Emma attempts to find love again but runs into numerous challenges that involve her past relationships, yet Emma and Ben met in a coffee shop and immediately clicked. Although the date was short, they both agreed they had a special connection, however it ended on terrible terms. There was a miscommunication that led to a falling out between the two. But when he gets invited to a friend’s wedding, they realized they would be forced to reconnect.
One of the two women engaged was Emma’s sister, and the other was Ben’s best friend. At first, they couldn’t stand each other, but they quickly realized that their actions were ruining the wedding. So, the two begin to scheme and know they need to get along to make their friends happy. It wasn’t until Emma’s ex-fiance showed up that the false romance evolved. The exploration of various jaw-dropping plots makes for a hilarious take on twisted romance.
Overall, Anyone But You provides a new take on romantic comedies and showcases the immense chemistry between Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. There was an extreme amount of anticipation and excitement for the premiere of this movie because of the marketing, and it did not disappoint. It is relatable and emotional and explores the talents of the actors and actresses. There was such a significant demand for this movie because society felt there was a lack of release within that genre, so the impact this movie had was refreshing. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received a fifty-three percent and a six-point five out of ten on IMDb. However, that rating surely reflects the general distaste for romcoms from a lot of film critics.
It is so refreshing to have two new great faces such as Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. I genuinely believe his movie is a must-watch. It seems a lot of others agree with me since it generated approximately $170 million with a $25 million budget. It attracted so many people and, indeed, was worth the time. I hope everyone gives this movie a shot as it’s an enjoyable experience everyone can enjoy. Something also intriguing about this movie is that it is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”. If you are into Shakespeare’s work give this movie a watch!
