Explore SUNY Cortland’s Black Student Union (BSU) events for the remainder of Black History Month, featuring discussions, activities, and celebrations aimed at fostering awareness and inclusivity. Join us in making a difference!
Staying active in our communities is important because it allows for us to have positive impacts on one another, while also making each other feel seen and heard. Getting involved creates inclusivity and allyship for those who may have faced adversity (a time where someone experienced a serious and/or difficult hardship).
From Monday, February 19 – Thursday February 29, there will be events hosted by students and faculty and staff. The Black Student Union (BSU) is an organization or club of students raising awareness on the cultural, political, racial, and social phenomena within the Black community here at SUNY Cortland. They will be hosting a multitude of events for the remainder of Black History Month.
Down below are the events that will be showcased from BSU for the rest of February.
Monday, Feb. 19, the Black Student Union will be hosting “Writing Letters to Incarcerated Men” in the Corey Union Voice Office from 6 p.m to 7 p.m. This is an event where people in the Cortland community can come and write letters to (Black) men that are imprisoned. Writing letters to these incarcerated individuals combats feelings of isolation and loneliness that they may feel, allowing them to feel connected to the outside world and have some sort of “normalcy.”
Tuesday, Feb. 20, “Wheel of Fortune: Black History Month Edition” in Corey Union room 301 from 6 p.m to 7 p.m. This event will allow individuals to show their knowledge of Black history and win a prize while doing so.
Wednesday, Feb. 21, the BSU= will collaborate with the Cortland N.A.A.C.P at 6 p.m to an open discussion on mental health within the Black community in the Corey Union Voice Office. This event may touch sensitive topics and can be triggering, while yet being proactive to those who may struggle with mental health.
Thursday, Feb. 22, “Round Table on the Politics of Cross-Racial Solidarity” at 4:30 p.m in the Colloquium rooms in Old Main. This event will acknowledge that different racial groups face different types of injustice, yet all of our struggles are similar or the same.
Friday, Feb. 23, “Black and Boujee: Masquerade Edition” from 10 p.m to 2 a.m in the Corey Union Exhibition Lounge. This is a formal event that concludes their week of events and closes out their Black History Month events. Cortland students will be able to share and showcase their talents (poetry, singing, dancing, etc.), and some even acknowledged.
Join the BSU and SUNY Cortland community in honoring Black History Month through engaging events that promote unity, understanding, and celebration of diversity.
