Cortland Men’s Lacrosse is buzzing with excitement as they prepare for an upcoming scrimmage against Union College. The team, led by head coach Lelan Rogers, has been hard at work honing their skills and strategies for this match-up.
The team started practice as soon as they got back on campus for the spring semester. Now that they’ve had a few full weeks of practice and preparation, they’re ready to scrimmage a team in a different color.
John Bowen, a senior defenseman, thinks that the men on the team are ready to get a glimpse of what the team will look like come this spring.
“We’re really focused on fine-tuning our game plan and ensuring that everyone is on the same page,” said John Bowen. “The scrimmage against Union is a great opportunity for us to test ourselves and see where we stand against a tough opponent, before the regular season starts.”
The players have been hitting the field everyday, running drills, and working on their stick skills. Team assistant captain Travis Wagner, emphasized the importance of discipline and dedication in the lead-up to the scrimmage.
“We know that Union is going to come out strong, so we need to be prepared both mentally and physically,” said Travis Wagner. “We’re all motivated to give it our all and show what we’re capable of.”
The scrimmage is expected to be a fiercely contested match, as last year when they scrimmaged each other, things got chippy throughout the game. Both teams are eager to prove themselves for the season to come.
This will be the first time the team plays together since they last lost the SUNYAC Championship to Geneseo, 13-7 last May, and senior Colin Peers is ready for revenge.
“We’re just extremely excited to get a chance to get back out on the field and play the sport we all love,” said Peers. “After a tough loss to Geneseo that ended our season last year, we will be out with vengeance.
The scrimmage is scheduled to take place this Saturday at Union College in Schenectady NY, with a 12pm faceoff. This will be the first of their two scrimmages before the season starts on Feb 28, at St John Fisher.
