As we adjust to our new schedules and return to SUNY Cortland for the spring 2024 semester, you may be thinking about our winter sports teams.
Some of you may not know, but individuals involved in winter sports teams do not have the five-week break as most of us do.
Being a member of winter sports teams here at SUNY Cortland means you stay on campus for most of the break attending practices and competing in matches/games. One of these sports taking place is women’s basketball. Let’s dive into our 2023-24 women’s basketball team.
Currently, the Red Dragons are 24-5 overall and 16-2 within their conference. The Red Dragons worked hard practicing over winter break with no distractions from classes or assignments while putting in the most effort they could each day.
Head coach Colleen Ames said, “I love winter break because we can practice more often without the distraction of classes and exams. The girls were completely locked in and focused on getting better every day. We won 7 out of 9 games in January and are hoping to continue to improve.”
Ames points out that their success has led to senior Logan Streety being named to the National Team of the Week and being awarded SUNYAC Player of the Week.
Brooke Tillotson, a sophomore guard, had this to say about the team’s winter break, “We had a big win over our rival, SUNY New Paltz, just a few weeks ago and will likely face them again in SUNYAC.”
Some may think the team would rather be home than stuck on campus over break, but Tillotson said, “Our team loves being on campus over the break because there are no classes or school assignments to stress us out. It’s just basketball for a few hours a day and then we are free to hang out with our teammates or friends which was so much fun! We had movie nights and cooked dinners together.”
Karlee Zinkievich, a freshman guard for the Red Dragons, mentioned over break they had lost to SUNY Oswego but just last week they got their redemption with a big win. “We are approaching playoff season and are hoping for a first-round home game, so be sure to get your Cortland apparel and come cheer on your Red Dragons!”
Currently, your Red Dragons are playing teams in their conference for the second time and then they will have SUNYACs starting at the end of February.
Coach Ames said, “Every game from here on out is important. We are focusing on tackling the obstacles in front of us so we can bring ourselves to a chance at the conference championship.”
Be sure to follow along with your SUNY Cortland’s women’s basketball team as they have big things ahead of them. Go Red Dragons!
