The SUNY Cortland’s women’s ultimate frisbee team started their 2023 season on a very positive note with the team doubling in size from an influx of new members.
President Carly Chardavoyne and Vice President Meaghan Connors share the active role of co-captains, often leading practices and planning tournaments. The team also expanded its social media presence with its increase in players by having Grace Galarza and Hannah Johanssen step in as social media managers. With their overall increases, the new social media managers take pride in designing an online Instagram presence for the team to share their tournaments as their season progresses.
During their 2023 fall season, the team participated in three meets, two at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and one in Ithaca. Their first meet was in Ithaca on September 24, where the women gave a tremendous effort playing through the rain but unfortunately lost to Ithaca’s team.
Their next meet was a two-day tournament from October 21st through the 22nd. This meet was Halloween-themed and a mixed meet, meaning the women’s and men’s teams played together. Unfortunately for the women, the men’s team was very reluctant in tossing to the female players. Nevertheless the women’s team remained victorious on day two of this meet.
Their final tournament was on the weekend of November 11th.
During this meet, the women’s team decided to try a different defensive approach called “zone” where instead of defending a player, you would defend an area. This different approach showed to be the better buy when the SUNY Cortland women’s frisbee team left RIT victorious.
As for their end-of-season stats, the team placed third in the Genny Cup and gained even more new members for the spring season of 2024.
Over the course of winter break Hannah Johannsen and Grace Galarza kept us updated on certain players of importance through Instagram features where these individuals were allowed to take over the account and post updates on what they were up to during their break. These posts included features from the beloved treasurer Anna Verwij, their gorgeous secretary Becca Sarno, and their amazingly incredible social media managers Hannah Johannsen and Grace Galarza.
They also included some more special features from the beautiful women on the team. These posts included features from Kaylee Baker, Edie Russo, Kaitlyn Buckley, and spring 2023 hightide MVP Sam Nania.
During last season the team also started selling merchandise which included a frisbee disc with a Scooby Doo theme, due to the team coining themselves as Mystery Inc. Mystery Inc. has also participated in a community service event in which the members of the women’s team gave a hand in building a community center for the homeless population alongside the Second Wind Cottages.
Their most recent endeavor includes a recent frisbee clinic they attended on January 28, in Buffalo, and they have scheduled a second one in RIT to look forward to. Overall, the women’s ultimate frisbee team had a very successful fall season and is anticipating an even better outcome to the spring 2024 season.
