As a SUNY Cortland student living on or off-campus with at least 6 credit hours, you may qualify for various on-campus job opportunities. These roles span from orientation assistants, interns, tutors, to personal trainers, and more. Student employment on campus plays a crucial role in enhancing valuable skills such as social interaction, time management, mentorship, professionalism, and organizational abilities.
These roles contribute to fostering a welcoming and inclusive community for all students, making their campus experience more fulfilling. Typically, these positions offer manageable workloads, with a maximum of 20 hours per week, ensuring they do not overwhelm students.
Applying for financial assistance programs such as work-study can expedite job consideration or approval for eligible college students. The program seeks to provide work to college students in need of a part-time job. According to SUNY Cortland Student Employment Services, the “federal financial aid award program that can help pay students wages for part-time employment during the academic year.”
In addition to meeting financial qualifications for work-study, job applicants typically need to demonstrate availability throughout the week or weekend, possess minimal conflicting priorities, and provide a resume or cover letter, along with completing I-9 paperwork. However, if you don’t qualify for work-study, don’t worry. Non-Work-Study positions are also available to ALL students. These positions offer regular paid part-time employment directly through the hiring department, with funding determined by the department’s budget.

- Visit Career Services: Make a visit to Career Services (Van Hoesen Hall, Room B-05) to make sure that you meet all requirements for the job you’re applying to and receive guidance on your application.
- Reach Out to Potential Employers: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your potential future employer with any questions or concerns you may have about the role or application process. Clear communication can help clarify expectations and demonstrate your enthusiasm for the opportunity.
