Similar to intramurals, club sports at SUNY Cortland offer students a dynamic avenue to engage in physical activity, foster lasting friendships, and compete in a variety of sports and recreational activities.
These programs, which include a wide range of options from rugby and ultimate frisbee to quidditch and dance, present a compelling alternative to varsity sports for those who are passionate about athletics. There is something for everyone at Cortland.
While intramural sports are a great option for students looking to play once a week with friends, Club sports offer a little more of a competitive atmosphere for athletes. While being on a club team is not as demanding as playing Varsity, it still does allow students to still play at a high level with a more flexible schedule.
“Personally, I like it because I still get to play a sport that I love, at a competitive level, without the commitment of a varsity sport. As someone who was going to play at the college level, I used to regret not doing it, but once I started playing club sports at Cortland that was no longer the case.” Said Tony Amelio, senior on the men’s club volleyball team.
They serve as an exceptional outlet for students to maintain their love for the game, develop their skills, and build a supportive community, all while thriving academically. Club sports at SUNY Cortland exemplify the idea that extracurricular engagement can be a rewarding and well-rounded aspect of the college experience, promoting personal growth and a healthy, active lifestyle.
“Varsity sports demand a significant time commitment and can be quite stressful, but with club sports, you can enjoy more fun and prioritize your academic responsibilities. It remains highly competitive, yet without the daily grind of practices and weekend games that can be overwhelming.” Said Junior Andrew Clifford. Clifford was on the Men’s Varsity Hockey team for 2 seasons, and now has started his first year with the club.
Club college sports offer a competitive outlet for student-athletes, striking a balance between the intensity of varsity competition and the recreational nature of intramural sports. These teams provide students with the chance to stay active, develop a team bond, and still have time in their schedules to pursue other hobbies, all while getting to play a sport that they love.
“I grew to love the competitive aspect of club sports here because it gave me the chance to continue to play, meet new people, travel, and most importantly for me focus on my academics.” Said Amelio.
Club sports provide an ideal platform for students to pursue their athletic passions, foster friendships, and maintain a balanced college experience. With their competitive yet accommodating nature, these teams offer the best of both worlds – the thrill of the game and the flexibility to excel academically. So, if you’re seeking a way to stay active, connected, and fulfilled during your college years, exploring club sports may be the perfect choice for you.
