Student Benefits
This is a three credit opportunity for students. NYPIRG is the largest student directed nonpartisan nonprofit in New York State.
When joining NYPIRG the organization wants you to know that you build great leadership skills and develop amazing connections.
All majors are welcome to sign up there is no major requirement.
NYPIRG’s Purpose
Advocating for free SUNY, defending democracy, combating poverty, fighting for the environment, promoting public health, and protecting consumers are among the causes you will be working on when you join.
They want you to build student Power.
“NYPIRG students have been fighting for students since the 70’s. We’re nonpartisan, so we follow no specific political ideology – everything we do is determined by our student-led state-wide Board of Directors.
We’ve successfully prevented tuition hikes, register thousands of students to vote every year, provide informational student empowerment events, and much more.”
What to Know Before Joining
Before joining NYPIRG it is important to be informed on what you will be doing for the semester, they state, “NYPIRG focuses on six main issue areas: democracy, higher education, public health, the environment, hunger and homelessness, and consumer protection. As an intern, you’ll take on one issue for the semester to focus on.”
During the Internship
When you get the internship you will focus on one issue (provided in previous paragraph) for the semester. As a spring intern you will take advocacy trips to Albany, where you will fight back against tuition hikes and send messages to legislators about what students need. This will be done through peaceful rallies and legislation meetings.
