Whether you’re a local, just passing through, or going to school here, you’ll be sure to find festivities going on this Thanksgiving in and around Cortland County. There are many events the days before and the day of Thanksgiving so if you are planning on going back home for break, you still might be able to fit in a festivity or two.
If anyone is interested in running on Turkey Day, like always, Cortland is hosting the annual YMCA turkey trot 5k race on Thanksgiving day near and around Main Street. So grab your sneakers and get to the starting line.
The Liverpool Turkey Trot is another race option held every Thanksgiving morning at Onondaga Lake Park that is loved by all residents and newcomers. There is a standard 5-kilometer race but if you are interested in a longer distance, they do also hold a 5-mile race for the more seasoned runners. The race is a nice way to start your day off and not to mention the fall atmosphere and the natural beauty of the park is to die for.
If you are of age and looking for a little music entertainment, the night before Thanksgiving, Billy Golicki returns to Cortland Beer Company for an evening of drinks and live music. The atmosphere of CBC is like no other day of the year!
And of course, who’s favorite part of Thanksgiving isn’t the dinner?
If you are staying here this break and you can make your way over to Syracuse, there is a Thanksgiving dinner at the Collegiate Hotel which has had a lot of notoriety in the past.
I asked a few kids on campus what their favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner was and I expected no different.
Senior Cam Tomassone isn’t the best when it comes to cooking, but he sure loves to eat.
“I can’t cook to help save my life but my parents make the best stuffing and cranberry sauce. I also love some good mashed potatoes. The Mashed potatoes and gravy are the best part of Thanksgiving. I am really looking forward to leaving for home this break.”
I can agree with Cam when he says the mashed potatoes and gravy are the best part. They are one of my personal favorites as well.
Sophomore Michael O’Leary was able to share his thoughts on the matter as well.
“I do this annual Turkey Day race with my family and once that is done, they host this huge lunch/dinner and have some of the best turkey I’ve ever had. But I’d say my favorite part of Thanksgiving is spending time with my family because they’re all I have and I couldn’t think of a better time.
Junior Kyle Toms, a Syracuse native has plans at home this Thanksgiving break.
“I’ll be back home this break in Syracuse with my family enjoying their company and also running the Liverpool turkey trot like always.
If you plan on going back home for break, Thanksgiving break begins on Wednesday, November 22nd, the day before the holiday. Be sure to make it back before the holiday so you can enjoy all the fun with your family. Make sure to tell your friends and family how thankful you are for them and most importantly, FEAST!!
