For assistance in searching for an internship, you can make an appointment through Handshake or by contacting Career Services at 607-753-4715.
First, you will want to make sure your resume is updated. You should also add this information to Handshake and LinkedIn to have an online version of your resume. For resume assistance, the professionals at Career Services can review your resume either during drop-in hours (1-3pm Monday-Thursday) or by appointment.
One option is to create or find an internship on your own. You can do this by making a pitch to local businesses or organizations you are interested in. It can be helpful to know what exactly you want experience in when researching the types of organizations you are interested in working for. You should also do some research to find the best contact person for a certain company or organization. When reaching out, you can either make phone calls, send emails, or send messages on Handshake or LinkedIn. Be sure to include your name, school, year, major, and what you are specifically interested in contributing to the business or organization.
Another option is to frequently check your Cortland emails and use other online resources. A lot of internship opportunities specific to your major are sent to your Cortland email. Be sure to also check SUNY Cortland’s social media sites for other possible opportunities. Handshake and LinkedIn are a great place to start when looking for a job or internship. On the SUNY Cortland website there is a list of ‘Sample Internships’ where students have interned with in the past. Some organizations on this list include ESPN, General Motors, Walt Disney World, and Madison Square Garden.
Once you secure an internship, make sure to complete the Internship Request Form in order to gain academic credit for it. After this, you will have to complete the Adobe Sign Online Credit Registration Form to confirm your registration. It is important to start the search and application process early in order to leave time for the approval and registration process, and to reduce stress near the end of your college career. For next semester, the deadline is December 1st, so make sure to keep that in mind!
