SUNY Cortland’s annual blood drive is coming up, and students should be encouraged to donate blood, as well as understand the importance of it and how it can benefit people in need.
Benefits of Donating Blood
- Donations of blood are essential for surgeries, cancer patients, accident victims, and more. Your gift has the power to directly save lives.
- Giving blood can help maintain healthy iron levels and lower the chance of contracting certain diseases.
- Blood drives frequently increase public awareness of health issues and the value of donating.
- It’s a rewarding way to return the favor and assist others in need.
- Blood donors might learn about potential health risks by learning which pathogens are checked for during blood donations.
The Washington Post published an article discussing the blood shortage in the US, “The worst such crisis in a decade. The current shortage isn’t as severe. But there are hospitals at “critical levels,” Baia Lasky, a medical director for the American Red Cross, said .

The need for blood is constant, and only volunteer donors can fill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime.
