Chat GPT has swept across the nation since its release. The use of this application has raised concerns among students and teachers concerning plagiarism when turning in assignments that were generated by AI.
Chat GPT is an AI-powered language model developed by OpenAI that allows you to have human-like conversations with AI. This tool is also capable of answering questions, and assisting on tasks such as writing emails, essays, and code. Since its release date on November 30, 2022, Chat GPT has gained insane popularity – especially regarding education.
Some teachers have been known to encourage their students to use the tool for ideas, brainstorming, organization, etc. Using the tool to complete assignments and write essays is plagiarism as clear as day and will not be tolerated. This may be why many teachers and Professors across the country have shied away from it.
I asked a few classmates what they thought of Students using Chat GPT and the answers were very surprising.
Sophomore Michael O’Leary was not too impressed with the usage of this tool – “I think students abuse the tool too much for it to bring about any good. I’m not a fan,”
To show you how capable ChatGPT is, I asked it to write 100 words about whether or not students should be allowed to use ChatGPT. The next paragraph is written using the tool.
The question of whether students should be able to use Chat GPT raises important considerations. While Chat GPT can be a valuable tool for learning and generating ideas, it’s essential to balance its use with traditional educational methods. Allowing students to utilize Chat GPT could enhance creativity, critical thinking, and information retrieval. It can serve as a supplemental resource, providing diverse perspectives and aiding in research. However, caution is necessary to ensure students don’t overly rely on AI-generated content and neglect developing their own skills. Educators must guide and monitor its usage to maintain academic integrity and encourage a deeper understanding of subjects. Ultimately, integrating Chat GPT responsibly into education can offer a promising blend of technology and pedagogy.
As you can see, Chat GPT does a very good job performing the task at hand. However, oftentimes we see these AI tools relaying and repeating information over and over. Oftentimes, it is easy to tell if someone used ChatGPT or not and software is also available that is able to detect usage.
“I think it’s been long overdue that we start using this. Some of my professors allow chat GPT to help with assignments and it has really helped a lot of us.” says Senior Physical Education Major Gerald Gentile.
This topic will most likely be heavily debated for the foreseeable future. But I believe students should be allowed to use the tool so long as it is only used for developing ideas and gathering important information and so long as they stick by the guidelines given by their Professors and institutions. Students need to continue developing their own problem-solving skills and critical thinking.
