To say the Cortland Baseball team has been on fire is an understatement. The Red Dragons are currently sitting atop a 17-game winning streak and are undefeated in conference play.
“We got guys who can hit, I guess it just took us a bit to wake up,” said sophomore second baseman, Kyle Novak.
And hit they have. Here are the top 5 hitters (currently) for the Red Dragons this season.
Honorable Mentions: Zachary Kringdon (.338, 3, 16), Matt Kraft (.368, 0, 24)
5. Hunter Holiday OF (Grad. Camden) – What a pickup Hunter Holiday has been for the Red Dragons. Holliday on the year has served a meaningful role in the middle of Cortland’s lineup. He is currently batting .387 with 2 home runs and 16 RBIs with an OPS of .981.
4. Dylan Mackenzie 3B (So. Canandaigua) –Dylan Mackenzie has been Mr. Relilable all year for Cortland. While also playing a gold glove third base, Mackenzie is currently hitting .308 with 3 homers and a team-leading 34 RBIs. While his average has dropped a bit late, his consistency with runners in scoring position can’t be overlooked.
3. Nick Chimotti IF (So. West Genesee) – Another young bat with a bright future in the heart of Cortland’s order. The middle infielder is hitting an astonishing .356 with 3 homers and 27 RBIs. Chinotti has also been extremely patient at the plate, tied for second on the team in walks with 15. His patient approach and power to the gaps have put his OPS to an unreal 1.008.
2. Chris Bonacci CF (So. Syracuse) – Chris Bonacci’s performance all year has been other worldly. Covering the entire outfield in center isn’t even his most impressive feat. Bonnaci is hitting .435, with 18 RBIs, and leads the Red Dragons in stolen bases with 11 and runs with 37. A prototype leadoff man who cannot be replaced, Bonnacci has a real shot to be an All-American come seasons end.
1. Mat Bruno LF (Grad. Rye) – One of the few upperclassmen that Cortland boasts, has been showing his experience all year. Bruno is a pure hitter, to say the least. Batting .409 with 3 homers and 30 RBIs, 8 stolen bases, and a team-leading 16 walks. Bruno has continuously came through for Cortland and currently has an unreal 1.145 OP. Bruno is another Red Dragon who has a great shot at being an All-American at the end of the year.
