After getting off to a slow start to begin the 2023 baseball season, Cortland Baseball is back on track. A large part of their recent success has been because of the consistency of their starters and flexibility in the bullpen. Cortland Baseball’s Top 5 Pitchers in 2023 (so far).
Honorable Mention- Shane Van Dam (FR. 4.80 ERA in 15 innings, 23 Strikeouts)
5. Liam Krasney, Jr. Greenville
Krasney had some struggles to start the year but has gotten back into his groove and has been a staple at the end of the bullpen for the Red Dragons. Other than one bad outing against New Paltz, Krasney has been lights out. His ERA is inflated (4.80) because of one game. But in his 9 appearances, he has only allowed a run in 3 of them. Look for his overall stats to improve has he sub 1 WHIP on the year and only has allowed 8 hits in 15 innings pitched.
4. Bryan Bernard So. Howell
Bryan Bernard has been a breakout star for the Red Dragons early on. The Southpaw is 3-1 on the year in 4 starts with 7 total pitching appearances. In 19 2/3 innings pitched, Bernard has a 2.75 ERA, 27 strikeouts, and held opposing hitters to a batting average of just .222 and WHIP of just 1.02.
3. Will McCarthy So. Farmingdale
Another staple of Cortland’s rotation is big right-hander, Will McCarthy. At 6’6 McCarthy is an imposing force on the mound and has gotten off to a great start. In his 6 starts, McCarthy is 4-0, pitching to a 2.70 ERA across 26 2/3 innings. While McCarthy is a hard thrower, he relies more on soft contact than the strikeout with 15 strikeouts so far this year. In his last appearance, McCarthy Threw 4 innings of 1 hit ball, giving up no runs to Rochester.
2. Tommy Lynch Fr. West Seneca
Tommy Lynch may be a freshman, but he pitches with the confidence of an All-American senior. On the year, Lynch has amassed 16 innings pitched, all out of the bullpen. He’s pitched to the tune of a 2.30 ERA, striking out 21 batters. Opponents are batting a measly .175 off of Lynch. As the season has progressed he’s been in more high-leverage spots, and leads the Red Dragons in saves with 3.
- Dylan Beers So. Monroe Woodbury
You can’t throw a no-hitter and not be the best pitcher on your team so far right? Dylan Beers has added to his impressive freshman year in 2022, with a strong start in 2023. Through 27 2/3 innings pitched, Beers has 34 strikeouts, a 3.25 ERA, and a WHIP of .83. An unreal start to say the least. The only smudge on his year is his first start against the #1 ranked Salisbury where he gave up 3 runs before getting pulled. Since then, Beers has allowed 7 runs in 27 1/3 innings atop the Cortland rotation.
