Anthony Volpe, a highly anticipated prospect in the New York Yankees farm system, made headlines this spring training with his outstanding performance. The shortstop, who is 21 years old, has been taking advantage of his chances, showcasing his abilities, and demonstrating that he has the potential to contribute significantly to the team in the future.
After graduating from high school in New Jersey, Volpe was chosen by the Yankees in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. With the Gulf Coast League Yankees in 2019, he made his first professional start. In 34 games, he batted .215 with one home run and 14 RBIs. He was unable to participate the following year because the minor league season was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Volpe has been excellent in spring training this year despite having no big league experience. He had six hits, including two home runs, and seven RBIs in his first 14 at-bats. His OPS was 1.382 and his batting average was.429 overall.
The fact that Volpe has been doing this against big league pitching is even more impressive. He has competed against some of the greatest pitchers in the league, such as Corey Kluber and Gerrit Cole and hasn’t come off as out of place. Many Yankees supporters are excited about his potential as a result of his demonstrated power hitting ability and plate discipline.
Fans, teammates, and coaches were all impressed by Volpe’s achievement in addition to the box office. Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees, has made no secret of his admiration for Volpe’s abilities, expressing his admiration for his approach with the bat. Volpe’s maturity was also praised by Boone, who noted that he conducts himself like a seasoned athlete.
Another aspect of Volpe’s spring training success that stands out is his defensive skill. At shortstop, he has been making remarkable plays while showcasing his arm power and range. Since high school, his defensive skills have been a strong asset, and it is obvious that he has continued to hone them.
Needless to say, his performance in spring training has certainly put him on the radar and on March 26, 2023 the dreams of a young Anthony Volpe became reality. After being called into Boone’s office, the manager and team alike decided to prank who would soon become their new shortstop. “There’s always room for development, but in the end, I think that development should happen in the big leagues,” Boone said just prior to reaching out his hand and welcoming Volpe to New York City.
This Thursday, March 30, is the Yankees 121 opening day and the fans can only hope Volpe will be put in the starting lineup. Many believe he has the potential to win this season’s rookie of the year including myself. One thing is for sure, that the 27 time World Series champions are in good hands but will this young shortstop aid the Yankees enough to score another ring?
Only time will tell.
