Have you ever wanted to join a club, sorority, team, etc. at Cortland but felt nervous about being judged? I did… until now!
Prior to coming to college, I didn’t think I was going to have the confidence to join a club, rush a sorority, or try out for a team. However, after my freshman year was over, I realized I wanted to be involved in on campus activities in some way. There were so many people I knew who were involved in something on campus and, from what I saw, they were enjoying every second of it.
So, I decided to put myself out there and join an organization,. In all honesty, that was the best decision I have made since coming to Cortland. I encourage everyone to be involved on campus for many reasons.
Joining an on campus organization opens the door to learning how to communicate better with people, experiencing new opportunities, stepping out of your comfort zone, and making memories for a lifetime.
Although it could be intimidating or uncomfortable in the beginning, it’s all worth it in the end. You make tons of friends, sisters, brothers, teammates and you get to be a part of something bigger than yourself.
I have always felt excluded from social groups and teams in middle school and high school. I just never felt a part of something before. After putting myself out there during this new stage of my life, I finally feel welcomed and comfortable with myself. That is another huge benefit of joining an organization on campus: the feeling of being happy and confident with yourself.
I have struggled with self confidence issues my entire life but after this new experience, I can firmly say that my confidence has increased dramatically. It’s not just about the fun on the weekends, but also about discovering who you want to be in college. This is the time and place for anyone to become the best version of themselves and explore who they truly are.
At one point throughout my college experience, I was so unhappy that I considered going home. This is normal for everyone to think about at least once during their time away at school. Thankfully, I stuck it out until I forced myself to put myself out there and I am so happy I did.
One of the best feelings anyone can have is after being included in something whether it be a club, sports team or Greek life. I have never been happier while being at school because I feel like this is finally my chance to be what I’ve wanted to be. I was uncertain at first because it was all so new to me, but putting myself out there turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made.
For anyone reading this who is considering joining an organization on campus… DO IT!!
I promise that you will have the best college experience moving forward after you take my advice. I strongly encourage everyone to at least give it a try because in the end, you want to look back at your college years with no regrets and a lifetime full of great memories.
