Intramural sports are a great opportunity to socialize with your peers and get involved on campus while still participating in your favorite sports. All students who desire to participate in competitive sports and possibly earn an intramural league champions shirt can do so at Cortland throughout the year in a variety of leagues.
Maddy Torres, a junior transfer student who came to Cortland this past fall, recently joined an intramural soccer team this spring semester and has bonded with her fellow peers but most importantly has fun while competing.
“Growing up I was always active, and my parents put me in sports as early as they could. I’ve always had a lot of energy and what better way to let it out than with playing sports,” said Torres.
“Some of my favorite core memories come from playing sports and having fun with my friends,” said Torres. “Coming into Cortland I knew that I wanted to get involved on a team and I’m happy with my decision of joining intramural soccer.”
Work on Your Own Schedule
As college students we all know how difficult it can be at times to juggle our busy day to day schedules. Intramural sports allow students the flexibility to work around their own time, as each team works together on building their play schedule.
Discovering A Sport Or Reconnecting

Intramural sports are a great way to try out something new as it is filled with students on the Cortland campus community who want to gain more experience in a particular sport. Or maybe spend more time on a sport they might not have given much of a chance in their youth.
Maddy Torres played for her high school’s soccer team her freshman year but later decided to swim competitively during the fall seasons throughout the rest of her high school athletic career.
“I always enjoyed playing soccer, but I never really stuck with it,” said Torres. “Joining intramural soccer has allowed me to reconnect with the sport and now I wonder why I even made the switch in the past.”
Physical & Mental Health
What better way to help reduce academic stress college students carry than to meet new faces and have a little competition? Intramurals are a great way to ensure you stay active transitioning into college life. Sports are also known to help maintain better mental health as it helps boost confidence but also helps to reduce stress and anxiety.
“Being part of my intramural soccer team gives me something to do and look forward to each week,” said Torres. “It really helps me clear my head and puts me at ease.”
