Spring Break: a week’s vacation for students in the spring.
I asked fellow students what their thoughts were for spring break, is it overrated? Spring Break: Is it overrated? Let’s see what SUNY Cortland students have to say
Some students take this time to travel with their friends and family other students take this time to stay at home and relax and maybe even work at their jobs at home. Let’s see what SUNY Cortland students have to say about this.
A majority of the group said they had no travel plans for the week, they’ll mostly be at home spending time with their families and working at their jobs.
Alli Bierce, a junior and Healthcare Management major, says she will spend time with her family. I asked Bierce her thoughts on traveling for spring break, is it overrated? If you had the opportunity to travel for the week, would you?
“ I would say during spring break traveling is overrated. I understand the concept of being in college and you worked hard, and you should have that time to treat yourself. But I also feel like when you’re in college and you’re away from your family for so long you should take time to cherish those moments you have to spend with your family…”
For students who live hours away from their hometown, cherishing the little time you have left with your family before you head out to the real world is a definite must.
“I would travel, maybe when I’m older and out of college and have more time to spend with my family and when I’m settled in a job and I have money to afford to travel…” Bierce said, but she wasn’t the only one who thought about traveling when they’re out of college as it may be overrated to do it now. Cleo Wadkins, a junior and Speech and Hearing Science major, said “Overrated? The saying of spring break of people like partying it up and traveling to a warm place, I would say it is… because of how it’s perceived on tv and such. But having a vacation itself seems nice, I want to travel to more places sometime in the future.”
Traveling is something anyone would want to do, whether it’s on spring break or just in general. Some students however do not think it is overrated. Diana Campos, a junior and a Communications studies major said she doesn’t think traveling during spring break if overrated, “If I had the opportunity, I would 100% take a trip on spring break.”
Overrated or not, I think we can all agree that having any type of break during the semester is needed. One thing that the students agreed on is being able to relax for the week.
“It’s nice to go home and get out of a college setting because I feel like I live in a simulation here,” Bierce said.
But what would you say to students who feel like they’re being left out for staying home and not having all these extravagant plans that their friends may have?
“Just because people posting their spring break trips look like they are having fun, not everything is as it looks. Everyone posts the best moments on social media to make it look like they are having the time of their life, but it’s not always true.” Said Melissa Leiter, a junior majoring in Early Childhood education.
