Artificial Intelligence services have been rising recently, but some are concerned that our freedoms are being put aside.
Around the beginning of January 2021, a service called DALL-E rose within the internet. With this brand-new service, you can input any prompt and have art come out.
For example, placing a prompt like “astronaut playing baseball with horses” or “fireman eating lunch with polar bear underwater” will create a “semi-realistic” portrait. Services like DALL-E 2, which is an improvement over the original service, to ChatGPT, which is a conversation tool that uses questions you previously asked, have risen since then.
With the rise of these services like this, the main question that everyone has is this: is it ethical?
From the beginning of its use on the internet, AI Art has been under major scrutiny. The way AI Art gets to the place it is by basically stealing art from artists. To program and get artificial intelligence to make the art, they use art from artists found on the internet.
By taking the art from those artists, these websites are stealing and profiting from hard-working people. Not only is it unethical, but it can also be taking somebody’s copyrighted product, making it illegal in many cases. By stealing somebody’s copyrighted art, you can open yourself up to lawsuits and copyright claims. Artists who paint and draw aren’t the only ones upset, though, as many musical performers and celebrities are taking issue with AI as well.
Another major concern many have with Artificial Intelligence is the spread of misinformation. Recently, there has been a rise in “deep-fake” videos. Deep-fakes are media in which a video of someone is replaced with the face of someone else. For example, you could have a celebrity like Beyonce or an important figure like Joe Biden saying something obscene and awful by “deep-faking” their face over someone else’s.
This has already happened, with pornographic content being made with the faces of many female celebrities. With this rise of deep fake and stealing art, many have called for AI content to be much more regulated and controlled. With all of these problems, many worry about whether or not Artificial intelligence is here to stay.
With many other fizzled out trends like NFTs and cryptocurrency, a big question that many is wondering is whether is Artificial Intelligence on a similar path. Although Artificial Intelligence has many issues and problems, it is an extremely impressive technology.
AI art has made extremely impressive art pieces as well as full songs imitating real artists. Although the technology has a long way to go, it is still extremely exciting and remarkable technology. However, meaningful developments in the field are likely to be hampered until we have more regulation.
As stated before, the websites and services that the AI use steals from artists and do not give anything back. With this in mind, Artificial Intelligence can come along the way by being much more focused on not stealing, rather working with the artists instead. With these ideas in mind, I find that if developers focus on improving the relationship and guidelines between artists and AI, we could have a much more beneficial and useful AI in the future.
