Is TikTok the Secret Weapon to Finding New Music?

Shania Austin · February 20, 2023

Have you been trying to expand your music horizons but don’t know where to find new songs? TikTok could very well be the answer.

Since its creation in 2016, TikTok has been a platform that gives entertainment to millions of people across the world. TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms used by everyday people to promote businesses, spread awareness & information, lets people showcase talents, and take part in popular trends.

One thing I have found use for on TikTok is discovering new music. Most of my Spotify playlists are songs that I have found on my “For You” page. I discovered Indie music just recently thanks to TikTok and now its one of my most favorite types of music. I listen to a lot of different genres of music, and I can say that the music scene on TikTok has shown me great songs for almost every genre. Some of my new favorite artists I found because they were promoting their music on TikTok.

Jessie Murph is a great example of what TikTok is capable of when it comes to promoting artists. She began promoting her music on YouTube, but, after moving to TikTok, ended up becoming one of the most famous musicians on the internet. Jessie Murph has 8.6 million TikTok followers and 5,170,523 monthly listeners on Spotify.

Some of her most popular songs like How Could You and Always Been You were sounds on TikTok before they released and, through the traction acquired on the app, became super popular trends. These teasers of her unreleased music creates hype and popularity for not just these songs, but her other works as well.

There are many other amazing artists that lots of people (like me) wouldn’t have discovered if it weren’t for TikTok like Andi Mitchell, Anees, Natalie Jennings and Alexander Stewart. TikTok isn’t just great for finding new music though.

After all, how many young people heard of L’Trimms 1988 song Cars With the Boom before TikTok?

These are just a few songs from different genres that I discovered because of TikTok:

Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me At All) By: Omar Apollo

Leave Me by Anees

Pool House by The Backseat Lovers

I Burned LA Down by Noah Cyrus

Gasp of Air by Lisa Curtis

Bills Paid by DJ Khalid, Latto, City Girls

Its Over by Cat Burns

Trademark USA by Baby Keem

We Go Down Together by Khalid and Dove Cameron

The Former by Steinza

Baby Wyd by Nardo Wick, Lakeyah

Free Me by Anees

We’re Not Kids Anymore by Cat Burns

Blames on Me by Alexander Stewart

Hollow by Victor Ray

Damage You Still Do by Mikayla Pasterfield

Ceilings by Lizzie McAlpine

Until We Drink by Savannah Sgro

A Blade of Grass by Jack Harlow

TikTok’s algorithm has been successful at spreading and promoting great music since its inception, and I, for one, am grateful for all the fantastic songs and artists I’ve been exposed to through this app.
