The Cortland Women’s Hockey Team celebrated their Seniors against SUNY Potsdam on Saturday.
The players Monica Cahill, Johna Ezzard, Katelyn Kantor, Emily Kromer, Jayden Kelley Quinn Metcalfe, and Grace Schnorr took to the ice for their Senior Night. Cortland celebrated their seasons in the best way, and that was with a win over SUNY Potsdam.
The Red Dragons took a victory over Potsdam with a 4-3 win which allowed the Cortland women to an improve their overall record to 19-6. They also improved their NEWHL record to 14-4 slotting them into the second seed only behind Plattsburgh.
This game also set a single-season record for victories, beating 18 that was set last season. This was a big game for the Red Dragons because the team broke two records.
Sophomore goalie Molly Georgen had 13 saves throughout the game earning her 26th career win. With this huge accomplishment, Georgen surpassed a record that was set by Deanna Meunier who held the record at 25 during her career from 2012 to 2016.
The scorers for the game that allowed Cortland to pull in the win were Freshman Kayla Persinger, Sophomores Gillian Zwolak and Natalie O’Brien, and Junior Nicole Tulowiecki.
Sophomore Mia Hlasnick and Junior Hillian Hlasnick Each recorded two assists for the game, and Graduate Students Quinn Metcalfe, Johna Exxard, and Senior Elena Eichmann each chipped in with an assist during the game. Cortland was able to get 52 shots on Potsdam and due to the consistent offensive pressure the Red Dragons were able to secure their victory.
Potsdam scored their goals from Freshman Rachell Cain, Sophomore Lyvia Chambers, and Senior Kaylee Merrill. Merrill, Chambers, and Sophomore Sara Barret all contributed assists allowing Potsdam to stay in the game.
Potsdam goalie Madelyn Adamic who is a freshman had 48 saves in the game against Cortland. Throughout the whole game, the Bears had a total of 16 shots on goal. Cortland pushed Potsdam out of the playoffs finishing off their season. Potsdam finished off with a record of 11-14 overall and 6-12 in the NEWHL.
Because of their win on Saturday, the Red Dragons earned themselves the #2 seed in the NEWHL. They will be playing Oswego on Saturday, February 25 for the opportunity to advance to the championship game.
