Student Activities Board (SAB) has many fun activities coming up prior to spring break 2023. They have a variety of events, Ed Mabrey a spoken word poet, Jimmy McCartney Comedy show, Casey McQuillen live musician and pajama karaoke night.
Katelyn Thompson, Student Activities Board President stated ”Our club loves the arts. We have a variety of different shows coming up before spring break and are so excited to see all the different artists perform as well as some SUNY (State University of New York) Cortland students.”
The first upcoming event is on Tuesday February 28th Ed Mabrey, a spoken word poet, will be coming to campus. He will be in the Corey Union Exhibition Lounge from 5:00pm – 6:00pm for a workshop where he will be teaching spoken word poetry. Spoken word poetry is not like traditional poetry. It is meant to be performed on stage and for an audience and not simply just written on a piece of paper. He will also perform his own poems from 7:00pm – 8:00pm in the Exhibition Lounge.
On Wednesday March 1st Comedian Jimmy McCartney will be in the Corey Union Exhibition Lounge to perform. From 5:30pm to 6:30pm he will be doing a Q&A about how to be a comedian. From 8:45 pm-9:45 pm he will be performing a comedy show. This will be Jimmy’s second time here on campus, he successfully completed a show here in September of 2022.
On Monday March 6th Casey McQuillen, singer, will be performing. She will be in Corey Union on the first floor from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. McQuillen was on season 13 of American Idol and has also been on the Kelly Clarkson show. SAB posted about the event on Cortland Connect and is encouraging students to “Come enjoy live music from powerhouse vocalist Casey McQuillen.”
SAB regularly hosts karaoke night however on Tuesday March 7th it will be pajama themed. This event will take place in the Corey Union first floor lounge. They will have free food and prizes at this event. Every participant who sings gets a raffle ticket for the chance to win a free prize. General board member Madison Krouse shared her thoughts on karaoke night, “The karaoke events are always super fun, they typically have a good turnout…I am really looking forward to pajama night.”
Another general board member, Joshua Bates shared that “SAB is important, and they put on a lot of fun activities for students. Joining the club and coming to club events has been a great way to find new friends and fun stuff to do on campus.” Bates is a new SAB board member and has made great friends from joining and feels that joining has increased his campus involvement.
While these events all occur before spring break 2023, SAB will still also have some fun events coming up for the rest of the semester. These events will also include spring fling and the activity week leading up to it. SAB will post these events on @cortlandsab on Instagram and Cortland connect.
