Are you interested in being an Orientation Assistant (OA)?
Becoming an OA comes with time commitment, responsibilities, expectations, and benefits.
OAs help new students adjust to their new life at SUNY Cortland. OAs have knowledge about the campus, are leads and role models, and are representative of what a SUNY Cortland student is like.
OAs will work the new student orientation over the summer (June 8- July 28).
Some responsibilities and expectations that come with being a OA are:
- Participate in OA training on college policies, education requirements and services, team building, and leadership development
- Assist in the preparation of Orientation activities and materials
- Facilitate large and small group discussions on college life, academics, and degree requirements for graduation
- Participate in Cortland Nites for students staying in the residence halls during overnight sessions
You will also be able to help new students and family members be comfortable and aware of their needs and concerns while building a relationship with future red dragon students. Not only with the students but you can build connections with OAs, faculty, staff, and administrators on campus and to maintain a positive attitude toward SUNY Cortland

To become eligible for this position you must be:
- SUNY Cortland undergraduate student attending Cortland in the Fall of 2023
- Good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (2.5 preferred)
- Evidence of academic excellence and co-curricular involvement
- Ability to maintain a positive and flexible attitude
- Desire to work with students, faculty, and staff
To Apply:
- Complete the application on the Cortland jobs website. The application will be available in late December.
- Email the link for the recommendation forms to your two faculty/staff recommendations. Recommendations must be submitted online for the application to be complete.
- Attend your group interview at the end of March.
- Attend your interview at the end of March/early April. A specific date, time, and location will be emailed to you.
- Check your mailbox for your decision on the letter the week of April 3.
There will be two information sessions in the month of February
Thursday, February 23 at 3 p.m. Colloquium, Old Main
Monday, February 27 at 4 p.m. Fireplace Lounge, Corey Union
The application deadline is on Monday, March 13.
