Ronny Mauricio is feeling the pressures of making his major league debut. Will he be traded or debut with the Mets this 2023 season?
Shortstop Ronny Mauricio signed with the New York Mets for $2.1 million in the 2017-18 international signing period. After signing with the Mets, Mauricio has always had the pressure of being one of the top prospects in his organization.
In spite of his best season in the minor leagues, last year hitting .259, 26 home runs, 89 RBI’s, and 20 stolen bases. Many fans, along with Mauricio himself, were disappointed that he did not get called up to the big leagues. Is there a future for the Mets’ shortstop?
Will Mauricio make his major league debut after the 10-year extension worth $341 million of shortstop Francisco Lindor in 2021? The Mets front office discussed bringing up Mauricio in the event that Lindor is injured, as a back-up. “ We don’t have plans to trade Mauricio. We need him just in case Lindor gets injured” Sandy Alderson, the Mets’ ex-president, talked about this during their spring training session in 2022. It is unclear what the Mets intend to do with Mauricio, but could consider trading him.
Major league teams can benefit from Mauricio’s ability from his powerful hitting to fielding techniques. What are the Mets plans with the prospect? Mauricio has expressed he’s ready to play in the majors. According to some fans, he is being kept from fulfilling his dreams.
“I’m ready to play in the major leagues and I can’t wait for the Mets spring training in St.Lucie to show my talent and what I could bring to the big leagues,” said Mauricio. The prospect aims to show the Mets organization that he has the drive and talent to contribute to the club.
After Mauricio’s performance in the Dominican Winter League and winning the MVP award this past winter. This may shift the Mets front office’s perspective if he has a role on the team or not. The Dominican Winter League is one of the world’s most competitive leagues, and Mauricio’s accomplishments of winning MVP as well as a championship is one of the highlights of his baseball career.
During the Dominican Winter League Mauricio has expressed “ I want to make my major league debut with the Mets, this organization gave me many opportunities and has shaped me into the player I am today.” Mauricio has also considered playing second base or third base. Still, the Mets don’t prioritize him for those positions as they have Brett Baty, Eduardo Escobar, Jeff McNeil, and Francisco Lindor available.
There is a decision to be made regarding the Mets’ shortstop prospect. Mauricio anticipates making his major league debut soon. His baseball talent could make him a worthwhile trade target for the Mets before the trade deadline in hopes of helping the team win its first World Series since 1986.
This April, Mauricio will turn 22 and has yet to make his major league debut. It is more likely, however, that he will begin his 2023 season with the Syracuse Mets on March 31st.
