Finding internships and job opportunities while also balancing your school work and any other activities you’re involved in can feel overwhelming. As a college student, it can be very easy to use your freedom to go out every weekend. This is totally fine however, it can quickly catch up to you financially leaving you struggling.
Here at SUNY Cortland, it is required for most majors to do an internship credit before you graduate, whether it be on or off campus. When it comes to internships, it may be stressful, like time is running out to get your credits, and it may be challenging to find one that you enjoy. However, there are numerous opportunities and many different topics. Are you a football fan? There are internship opportunities for SUNY Cortland students to intern with the Buffalo Bills! This is an amazing opportunity that you can consider.
SUNY Cortland student Ryan Mclynn shares his thoughts on internships. “Personally I’m not sure where I want to intern yet. I know I definitely would love to do something relating to sports and/or media because that’s what I would like to focus on in my career.“
Next I decided to ask Ryan if he is considering doing an online internship or if he would like to go in person. He replied, “I think an online internship would be amazing as a college student, it would be hard to travel constantly and things can be simpler online.” I also asked him what he thinks about the internship opportunity with the Buffalo Bills. He replied, “Interning with the bills would be a dream. The chance to work for a top franchise in one of my favorite sports is the reason i came to Cortland and took sport management classes.”
While it is not required for students to have a job, it is definitely something to consider. When it comes to job opportunities on campus there are so many positions available. You can navigate the SUNY Cortland website to view current job postings on and off campus.
There are usually many opportunities working for the Cortland Auxiliary. I currently work at Fuel and at Bistro. Working on campus is great because the managers understand that as students the hours we can work can be all over the place due to classes and extracurriculars. I always recommend that my friends looking for work on campus consider working for Cortland Auxiliary.
I asked Ryan if he works as a student. He replied “I actually have been working at A Round Pizza this semester. It’s a pretty good gig. I am a delivery driver and help in the kitchen. The hours are flexible and since I have my car travel is not as much of an issue for me. I also get to take home slices sometimes which is really great as a college student.“
Ryan also shared his other experiences he had working as a student. He replied, “Last semester and last year I would do door-dashing throughout the week. Being a door dash driver is very simple and you get to be your own boss. However, the pay is unpredictable and it takes a lot of order to make a significant amount of money. But I would still recommend it to anyone who is in between jobs or just wants to make some cash on the side.
Don’t hesitate, check out the amazing internship and job opportunities Cortland has to offer.
