The beginning of a new semester is always stressful. Starting new classes and creating a new daily schedule can be quite overwhelming. Which is why it’s so important that you take care of your mental health; poor mental health can lead to a lack of motivation, and resultantly, poor grades.
As the new semester begins everyone wants to be prepared to take on all their new classes. Students sometimes get too overwhelmed which causes your mental health to drastically change. However there’s many ways you can take on your mental health before it gets worse. Getting exercise, eating healthier, creating a schedule, and making sleep a priority are just a few ways to have good mental health.
Mental health could be a big struggle especially in college. If you’re ever struggling it’s always important to talk with someone. This can be your family, friends, or even a counselor on campus. If you keep these feelings and thoughts inside it could cause you to drift away from your family and friends and overall it has an impact on your school life. Talking to someone about what you’re stressed about can help release these built up feelings and you can get advice.
When workload starts building up that’s when most students seem to become stressed. That’s why it’s important you create a daily routine schedule. This can give you some sort of guidance in figuring out a schedule and when you can get work done out of the day. It’s also important to remember you can take a wellness day off sometimes. Working on yourself and your mental health is more important. Going on a walk outside, watching your favorite show, and surrounding yourself with positive people are ways to get your head space in a better place. Although it could be hard for some people to open up about their feelings it’s important to know that there’s so many people who are willing to help you.
The weather in Cortland could also be hard on students’ mental health here. Some call it “seasonal depression,” typically taking place when it’s cold and snowy. This causes students to want to stay inside and watch a movie instead of getting exercise, doing school work, and going on a walk as we could if it was warm out.
Overall your mental health should be your top priority before school work. Having a positive headspace can completely change the way you feel waking up everyday and how you act around your friends and family. There’s so many things you can do to work on your mental health, it’s just a matter of putting in the effort. With Spring semester starting, workload increasing, and meeting your new professors it definitely causes anxiety in a lot of students. However if you put in the time, work on yourself, and do your best you’ll have an amazing semester.
