Social media has been taking over the lives of many in positive and in negative ways. But is social media a reliable place to find information on the world around us?
Social media has made its impact on society and peoples lives both negatively and positively. People have become internet famous overnight which leads them to be the talk of the town. Influencers like Alix Earle are now traveling across the world for brand deals along with many other influencers.
However, social media has always been a questionable resource for many reasons. There have been many instances where social media has not been accurate. What you see on the internet can fool you very easily and can lead you to misinformation. I strongly believe there are influencers out there who are genuine people but, on the other hand, there are some who are not even close to good people.
Social media itself can be very toxic and not trustworthy whatsoever. You never know what is truly going on behind closed doors. This is the main reason social media is not a valid news source. The only people who know the truth about a situation involving other influencers are these popular influencers. Although they might be a genuine person, they could still be hiding the truth for other reasons.
Throughout this world of social media and influencers things spread very quickly, which in some ways could be a positive aspect. For example, a hot new couple from Love Island that the people love so much debuting their relationship on social media platforms can entertain and intrigue people like us.
The way I see it is that social media is kind of like high school. You hear things about people you know through other people, but that doesn’t automatically make it true, Information about people gets spread very quickly throughout high school and on social media through gossip. There have been so many instances where I’ve read up on influencers drama and half the time, the information I find turns out to be false or inaccurate.
Gossip surrounds social media and all social media influencers everyday more than we know. People of all ages look up to influencers for different reasons, but that does not mean any of the drama is true. If you stay up to date with certain influencers, you would know that there is always drama or a spotlight surrounding them.
My point from all of this is you truly just never know the truth whether influencers “explain the truth” or not. Social media to me is not my go-to news source. I am nineteen years old and I know what not to trust. Social media is not something that I would ever rely on.
I have grown up with social media surrounding my everyday life unlike my parents, who do not know anything about how social media works. But, I do know that even my parents would not trust a social media platform for important information and news. Social media is nothing but a toxic environment for kids of all ages and should not be trusted no matter what anyone says.
