On Saturday, February 4th, Cortland Club Tennis traveled to Rochester for a USTA Invitational Tournament. The tennis team competed against some notable colleges: Cornell University, the University of Buffalo, Ithaca College, Niagara University, Syracuse University, Binghamton University, and the University of Rochester.
This tournament consisted of three rounds of competition, in each round Men’s singles, Women’s singles, Men’s doubles, Women’s doubles, and Mixed doubles competed. Each game was played first to six and if a tie occurred they had to play a tiebreaker.
In the first round of three Cortland began their play against Syracuse University. The tournament started with Dylan Latargia and Marc Pasani playing Men’s Doubles, they lost 2-6. For women’s Doubles Samantha Borozny and Cambrie Hibbard played and they lost 1-6. For Women’s Singles Erin Mahar played and won her match 6-4! Men’s singles were played by DJ Caloia who lost his match 0-6. In Mixed Doubles, Isaac Caballero and Molly Glittlemen played and lost their match 2-6.
Despite a good effort Cortland lost overall to Syracuse with a score of 11-28.
In the second round, Cortland battled against Ithaca College. For this part of the bracket Dylan Latargia and DJ Caloia played men’s doubles and lost 2-6 in their match. Women’s Doubles won their match 6-4 and was played by Erin Mahar and Samantha Borozny. Men’s Singles was played by Brian Tye who won his match 6-4. Women’s singles were played by Emilia Fuentes who played a tight game. The game went into a tiebreaker at 5-5, she then lost in a hard-fought match with a score of 5-9. Mixed Doubles lost 1-6 and was played by Marc Pasani and Cambrie Hibbard.
With the overall score, Cortland lost with a very close overall score of 20-25.
For Cortlands final round they went up against Niagra University. This bracket was a very close-knit match and came down to the final few points.
Men’s Doubles was played by Brian Tye and Dylan Latargia and lost their doubles match 3-6. Women Doubles won their match 6-0, this game was won by Samantha Borozny and Molly Gittleman. Marc Pasani played men’s Singles for this bracket and lost 4-6. Women’s Singles was won by Erin Mahar with her third win of this tournament with a score of 6-3. Another close match took place with a tiebreaker in mixed doubles. Isaac Caballero and Emilia Fuentes fought for their win after their tie of 5-5, they then pushed through in the tiebreaker with a score of 5-3.
Cortland pulled in with an overall win in their third round with a score of 25-20. This win, allowed them to be placed in 7th place out of 8th in the Rochester USTA Invitational Tournament.
