Finals week is arguably one of the most stressful times of the year. With classes winding down and everyone stressing to make sure they are happy with their grades, it is very easy to become overwhelmed. It is the final chance to get your grades up and ensure you are going home this semester satisfied with how things turned out. Luckily there are numerous ways to help create a less stressful studying environment for yourself, and plenty of ways to help you succeed without completely overwhelming you.
Stay Organized.
One of the ways that I have found most helpful to stay on top of work is writing down your thoughts and planning out your days. This is not only extremely helpful throughout finals week but also the entire semester in general. Being able to look at a planner and know when everything is due will help you plan out time to get everything done and overall just make your workload seem a little more doable.
Prioritize Sleep.
Getting a good night’s sleep each night is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, but for some reason is the first thing we are willing to sacrifice when it comes to studying and getting work done. Putting your phone down, and closing your computer at a reasonable hour will help allow your body to rest and get a full night’s sleep. Try and keep your body active throughout the day so when it comes time to go to bed your body is tired. Overall take time to relax and clear your mind before falling asleep, trying to sleep with a racing mind is very difficult.
Take Time For Yourself.
Even when you are super stressed out, don’t forget to prioritize yourself and your own well-being. Take time each day to do something you enjoy, whether it’s getting in a workout, listening to music, or even something just as small as grabbing your favorite cup of coffee. Finding time each day to do something that makes you feel good will help you stay motivated and give you an extra push to get all the things on your agenda done. While finals and doing well in your classes are important, it is not more important than your mental health.
Utilize Your Resources.
I know it can be intimidating to reach out to your professors, but taking the time to speak with them and ask questions can benefit you more than you think. Your professors want to see you do well, and they usually even appreciate that you are putting in the effort to succeed. So ask questions on topics you are confused about or even due dates, it will benefit you and even help relieve some stress. Also, I know it can be hard to find a quiet relaxing place to study and focus. Take a trip to the library, and even book a study room. This can help more than you think, not having the stress of loud roommates or outside distractions can allow you to focus and get your work done.
Finals are stressful, but it doesn’t have to be completely overwhelming. Take time to realize your stress triggers, and find things to do that help you relieve some of that stress. You have made it this far, and do what you can to finish strong!
