SUNY Cortland is nearing the end of the semester and tensions are heating up. It seems as though it was just move-in day at the end of August; seeing your friends you haven’t seen all summer or just meeting new ones. In a blink of an eye, it is already December and we have seen some snow here and there.
With finals week is upon us and time running out for assignments and studying, students are frantically working hard to finish this semester strong. There is a lot of mixed feelings, as some are excited to get through finals week and finally be home, versus those sad to leave the friends they have made here.
To get a better understanding about how people are feeling towards leaving, I interviewed a few people around campus.
“I am excited to go home but I don’t want to deal with my home responsibilities, even though I am so sick of being here at this point” Remy Herrnson, sophomore political science major said.
“Yeah, I can’t wait to go home just because I think this year has felt so long,” Jonathan Rollo, a junior criminology major says, “I love going to school here but just like everything else, you can get sick of the same thing over and over again.”
“I feel like this semester went by so fast but slowed down these past few weeks,” Sydney Sullivan, junior, remarks that “I actually have never wanted a semester to end more than this one. I have been here for almost three years and this one has been like the toughest and most stressful out of them all.”
After hearing many people are excited to go home, I asked a few more students what they were excited to do once they got home.
“I really cant wait to go home. I love home so much! I can’t wait to see all my friends and family,” Lindsey Hanglow sophomore, business economics says, “Oh and I also live on the beach so I love to go running there in the winter.”
Junior, Jennifer Dwyer says, “What I am most excited for is a nice home cooked meal, especially at my grandparents house. I also think the energy at my house is happy around Christmas time and I’m excited to decorate the tree and just spend time with everyone.”
With the holiday season approaching, it sure isn’t keeping anyone from wanting to stay on campus. Most students find themselves leaving just as soon as their last final is done. Looking forward to sleeping in, seeing your home-town friends, spending time with family is what this season is about.
It seems as though there is a mixture of attitudes, which is completely understandable. As the semester goes on, assignments pile up and the weather gets colder, it is clear that students are burnt out at this point. No matter how you are feeling, try to finish off the semester in bright spirits and your best foot forward! Good luck to all on their finals!
