Moving into college may seem scary at first, being hours away from the life you had in your hometown and starting over. Choosing to attend school at SUNY Cortland is a great choice, as there are many different ways to make new friends and settle into your home away from home.
If you are nervous about making new friends your freshman year, here are some of the best ways to put yourself out there and have the best experience possible here at Cortland.
Leaving Your Door Open
On the first day or two you move in, leaving your door to your room open while you’re there is a great way to meet people. Chances are, the other people in the same boat as you are and will be willing to walk around and talk to new people. Leaving your door open will give other students the opportunity to say hi while passing by.
Knocking On Doors
Along with leaving your door open, knocking on the doors of people who live in your building will also give you a chance to start a conversation with other freshman. Personally, I made a lot of the friends I have now by knocking on random doors for the first few days. It’s a lot less awkward than you would think.
Joining a Club
This may seem like an obvious one, but joining a club is such a good way to meet people that have similar interests to you. There are so many unexpected clubs Cortland has to offer that aren’t related to sports of Greek life. Being part of the A Cappella club here has introduced me to new people that have so much in common with me besides a passion for singing. It is such a good way to try new things and put yourself out there.
Going To Events
The first week of school, Cortland offers a lot of events for incoming freshman to meet people including a welcome bonfire and more welcome week activities. People attending these activities are all looking to meet new people. Don’t be afraid to approach people and introduce yourself, it’s completely normal.
Going To Parties or the Bar
Attending house parties or going to the bar (responsibly) is actually a good way to meet new people. I know so many more people after going out on the weekends. This should all be done in a responsible manner.
Talking to Your Classmates
Befriending people in your classes is helpful in so many ways, as you can study and complete assignments together. You tend to get closer with people you have a lot of classes with and are in your major which may form a bond outside of class as well.
These are just a few ways to seem more approachable in your first few weeks at college. You’ll make lifelong friendships and many memories you can look back on in the future!
