It’s that time of year again. Halloween weekend in Cortland is back and it’s not too late to throw together an outfit and call it a costume. In Cortland, Halloweekend is back-to-back nights of dressing up with your friends, taking pictures, and having fun. Buying costumes can be super expensive, and sometimes it doesn’t even feel worth it to spend money on something you might only wear once. Here are some costume ideas for those last-minute people.
LEAF BLOWER
This one is my personal all-time favorite and I will actually be disappointed if I don’t see someone do this in Cortland. All you need is a plain t-shirt and a hat. Go outside, pick up some leaves and get work. Grab a sharpie and write “leaf blower” on the shirt, glue some leaves to the shirt, and then you will need to find a string. Tie the leaf to the hat so it hangs in front of your face and you can blow on the leaf all night long. BOOM. Leaf blower.
Clown
I personally don’t think the clown costume idea will ever go out of style. It’s very simple to do and you can customize it to be cute or creepy! This costume focuses mainly on the makeup that goes along with it. I’ve seen a lot of people do this and just wear a red shirt and jeans. For the makeup, you don’t need to be an expert to do this and you can really make it as crazy as you want. All you need to do is those little triangles on the eyes that the clowns do with some black paint or some eye shadow.
Minion
Okay, this might be controversial but… Minions are in. This year, I am predicting we are going to see a lot of people doing the Vector or Gru costumes. Being a minion could be cute or funny, or both. All you need is a yellow sweatshirt and jeans, overalls if you have them but regular jeans would be fine too. Put the hood up on your sweatshirt and tie it tight with the string. If you want to go crazy you can paint your face yellow, and draw on or buy some glasses.
Decades
There is just so much you can do with dressing up like someone from the decades. You could quite literally pick any decade from the past and pick clothes out of your closet and try to match it. I would think the ’80s or early 2000s would be the easiest. Another idea of decades would be to do the future. Dressing as your future self is a fun and unique costume to do. My favorite is when people dress like old people. Go to the Thrifty Shopper, find some clothes that an older person would wear, draw lines and wrinkles on your face, maybe some gray hair spray if you want, and have the time of your life.
These are just some ideas of a few costumes that are somewhat easy to pull together. Halloween doesn’t have to break the bank and if you are creative with it, you can have an amazing costume. Remember, the Thrifty Shopper is your friend and they truly have a lot of clothes that could make a great costume. Just remember to be yourself, have fun, and be safe! Happy Halloween, Cortland!
