How to Manage Midterms

Keilany Soriano · October 10, 2022

Congratulations! If you are reading this, then this means you have made it to the halfway point of the semester! But before we can get to celebrating, we must tackle mid-terms! Here are some tips on how to have a successful and effective mid-term week.

Get Organized

Start by writing down which days and times your mid-term papers or exams are in your planner or phone. Set reminders and notifications so that you do not forget upcoming deadlines and exams. As you are inputting exam and paper dates in your planner, take it the next step further and allot time within that week prior and the week for studying and writing. Typically, professors will include the mid-term date in the syllabus so make sure to keep track of it from the start of the semester. A pro tip is that some students that typically have a busier schedule will plan around midterms week and reduce any other events that may conflict with midterms week. For example, some students may request time off from work ahead of time if they know they will need that time to study or draft a paper. Do not wait until the last minute to request off work because I can assure you, you will not be the only one struggling to look for somebody to cover their shift.

Managing Your Time Effectively

Prior to the start of midterms week, you should be setting up a time schedule so that you can ensure that you will give yourself enough time to study and write papers. Now I know it may seem tempting to just leave all the studying for the night before the exam, but we all know that strategy is not effective. Schedule study sessions for each of your subjects each day to properly retain the information. Another way to effectively manage your time during mid-term week is by minimizing distractions to utilize your time more effectively. Some students delete social media or streaming apps off their phones so that they stay focused. Others use the “Do Not Disturb” functions on their phone when they are studying. It is important to take each day as it comes during mid-term week so that you are not overstressing yourself. Take one midterm at a time and you will find yourself less anxious about all your exams and papers.

Take Breaks and Maintain your Energy

While it can be overwhelming to study for exams and write papers all within the span of a week, it is important to remember that mental health and physical health always comes first. In between studying, take a 20–30-minute break and do something that makes you happy. Go grab something to eat and drink, go for a walk, or even chat with some friends for a bit. The last thing you want to do to yourself is overwork your body and brain during an important academic week like midterms. Along with allotting time for schoolwork, make sure to include time for yourself to relax. You will be refreshed and able to tackle the next study session.

Celebrate Small Wins

There is no better feeling than getting a good grade on a test or paper. Acknowledge your challenging work and growth by treating yourself and sharing your success with others. Celebrate those good grades by rewarding yourself with something that makes you happy, whether it is ordering in from your favorite restaurant or taking some time off to watch a new movie. Take a picture of your grades and send them to your friends and family. They will be just as excited as you are to see your growth and hard work pay off.

I know it can be easy to get distracted and lose focus, especially with a break right around the corner. Push through and grind your hardest until you have completed all your mid-term papers and exams. Your break will feel so much worth it once you have reached your end goal. Do your best and believe in yourself. Just remember that you are halfway to the finish line! Mid-terms are a stressful time for all of us, so I assure you, you are not the only one feeling alone.
