Want to make some extra money during your free time this academic semester? One of the best ways to earn additional money for yourself is by acquiring a job on campus. Here are some tips to help you find the job you want on campus.
Establish a Search Criteria
Before you can start applying to jobs on campus, you should first decide what you want to gain from this working experience. It is common for students to look for positions that are related to their academic studies. This is a perfect way to gain some experience working in your interested field and can give you a better idea of what career path you might want to choose after graduation. Another common path that students like to take is based on their own personal interests. For some students, they might want to teach fitness classes at the gym. Others might enjoy working in customer service and would like to work in the bookstore. As a college student it is best to keep an open-mind when looking for positions; it does make the process a lot easier once you’ve created your own search criteria.
Contact Career Services
Checking for job listings on SUNY Cortland’s website is way more simpler than we think. If you go under the “Student Life” tab on the school’s main website, you’ll find a section that says “Student Employment Services” and from there it’ll take you to a generator that will help you search for a position that you might be interested in. The SES section of our website will also generate a list of available positions so you know what is currently available. The dining halls, library, Student Life Center and admissions offices are just a few of the employment opportunities that are offered on our campus. With a list of several different facilities and services that our campus provides, you are more than likely to find a position you desire.

Talk to Friends
You might have a friend or classmate that is working at a facility on campus that you might be interested in. Ask if they know of any available positions or if they can assist you with the application process. I got my job on campus through a friend who told me their supervisor was in need of employees. I reached out to the supervisor, who emailed me back immediately and was hired within days.
Follow Up
After applying to any of your desired positions, it may take a couple of days to receive a response. If you haven’t heard back within a couple of days, it doesn’t hurt to reach out to the supervisor and ask if they have any update on your application. There are times that supervisors may miss an email or application notice which can cause delays in your application process. Don’t feel embarrassed or pushy when sending an email asking about your application. It shows that you are genuinely interested and determined to work. There is always the possibility that a position you applied for may not be available at that time. Continue to apply for other positions and keep an eye out for any openings as most services are always looking for new hirees.
School Comes First
While getting a job on campus can become a priority, always remember to keep a healthy balance between academics and employment. Working on campus is great in a sense where they will not overload you with hours and are pretty flexible when it comes to scheduling. It is up to you to make sure that you are managing your time wisely and prevent falling behind in your school work.
There are several benefits to working on campus. You make relationships with fellow students and supervisors that can help you along in the future, it looks great on a resume, helps build a connection with your school and most importantly you’ll have some extra cash in your pocket.
